In Basque mythology, as the day belongs to light and the living, so too does the night belong to the dead and the darkness (in Euskara: "Gaua gauekoentzat eta eguna egunekoentzat.": "The night for night spirits and the day for day spirits."). The patron of the night and of the unquiet dead was a creature named Gaueko, and stories about him are as variable as the phases of the moon. Some describe him as little more than a monster, a shaggy doglike thing that walked on two legs and slaughtered shepherds and their herds. Others describe an enigmatic creature that could take the form of many different creatures of the night; a man, a ghost, a lion. Still others speak of a man with deep-set eyes who wanders the night with a sack full of dreams and nightmares to distribute to the sleepers he encounters. In all forms he is very strict about etiquette during the night, and punishes those who do not show proper respect.

No one really knows how much of these old stories are true...not even Gaueko himself. His memories are cloudy. As he stands now, Gaueko has the form of a tall, powerful man, though he's also been known to take the form of a huge black wolfhound. He considers his dog shape to be his "other self", and indeed his mindset is somewhere between a man and a dog's. Like a dog, he's very present-focused and doesn't think about the past much...truth be told, he doesn't even remember much of it unless very specifically reminded. Even then, the memory doesn't have much in the way of context. He's made some mention that his people are gone and much of the land he used to walk was destroyed...but it's not certain even he remembers why or how.

What is known is that Gaueko came to this town when he sensed the forces gathering there, and particularly when he realized the being he calls "Sugaar" (Iblis) was ruling over it. Gaueko considers Iblis his master, and came to serve him and play a role in the coming events. Since then, he's had an interesting time of it...

Significant relationships and interactions:

Iblis: Known to Gaueko as "Sugaar" (in Basque mythology the supreme male deity, a being associated with thunder, fire and serpents, considered a demon in some areas), Iblis is Gaueko's master in every sense of the word. Gaueko serves him willingly and with affection. He visited the tower almost immediately upon arriving, and since then the two have met often. Aside from one disagreement about Gaueko not revealing Verdandi's true nature, their interactions have been almost entirely friendly, including a few instances in which they have had rather violent sex. Gaueko said it best; every dog is a little bit in love with his master.

Anushka: Gaueko and Anushka met on Gaueko's first night in town. She ended up taking him home, where he claimed her as his priestess and worshiper. Since then their relationship has evolved from one of strict ownership and function to something deeper. The two of them have developed a great deal of affection for one another, and he has come to admire Anushka's courage and eagerness for power. It was Anushka who revealed the true connection between Gaueko and Glass, and has provided him with information on the events in town. When Anushka's madness was healed by Kaeli, resulting in the loss of her psychic abilities, she asked Gaueko to help break her again. He brutalized and tortured her to do so, and in an odd way this has brought them closer. Since Anushka's powers were boosted by Iblis, Gaueko's relationship with her has shifted some, becoming less one of ownership. Since then he has been more inclined to talk to her, not to mention tolerate her almost killing him by accident. Their relationship is an odd mingling of god to priestess, father to daughter and lover to lover.

Glass: Some 28 years ago, Gaueko was wandering the moors of Wales when he encountered a young herbalist woman named Tesni. One thing led to another and they had an affair that last a few weeks before Gaueko got bored and moved on, as gods are wont to do. What he didn't know was that Tesni was pregnant. The resulting baby was Glass. From their first meeting Gaueko has known there was something odd about Glass, and their later encounters only confirmed this. Finally, Anushka told Gaueko who Glass was, and he took great delight in telling her. Since then, Gaueko's taken a rather paternal attitude towards Glass, saving her from potential rapists and teaching her to use the little bit of magic she inherited from him.

Verdandi: Verdandi and Gaueko ran into each other at the Tavern and promptly fell all over each other. She ended up going home with him and having a very cheerful threesome with he and Anushka. Since then, the two of them have gotten increasingly close (Verdi got briefly mad at Gaueko after he beat Glass, but they made up; in the course of the discussion he swore never to harm Iago). Gaueko has had what some would consider a rather unhealthy influence on her, causing her to explore her dark side through killing both animals and men.

Tez: Despite having some history together (both being night gods with animal avatars), Gaueko and Tez do not get along, partly because Gaueko reminds Tez of all that he was and wanted to leave behind, partly due to jealousy over Iblis, and partly because Gaueko thinks Tez is a whiny ass. Given this, Iblis took great pleasure in playing them off each other. There most significant interaction so far has been the rather epic battle on the Carnival grounds, which resulted in both of them reawakening their godly sides. They haven't met since, but there's a certain measure of gained respect.

Djinn: Gaueko and Djinn's relationship used to be one of colleagues. They didn't LIKE each other much, and sometimes Iblis used them against each other, but overall they took little notice of each other until Gaueko's fight with Bakeneko. That was when Gaueko found out that Djinn had taken the opportunity to make a bloodstone out of his blood and skin, and could use it to inflict terrible pain on him. On Djinn's next visit he gave the bloodstone to Anushka, and caused her to use it and her own powers against Gaueko, wounding him severely. They haven't met since.

Wanda: On Gaueko and Wanda's first face-to-face meeting, she tried to kill him, and failed quite spectacularly. Since then, she has evolved into his favourite toy,
