Outside the rundown livehouse, girls were gathered about, all dressed in various fashion. Some were wearing extravagant Lolita garb, others were dressed very punk like with ripped up clothes and spiky hair. Ruki pulling out a cigarette leaned against the wall as he waited for the doors to open. He was there to scout out drummers. Two bands were playing there tonight. If he saw one he liked, he would have to find a way to get in the back to meet them. At other venues, ones he performed in, he at least knew a couple of the people that worked there but he had never been here.

He took a deep sigh. Directing his concentration on all the girls around him, he tried to get his mind off of things, off the discussion in the car, off of Fuwa and Isao but he couldn’t. Sitting in the backseat like that reminded him of when he had lived with his parents. On good days he remembered him and his mother were often really chatty and they would be talking about all sorts of random things, sometimes discussing comically an old enka singer they had seen on television and her new wild dresses or crazy hair. Sometimes they would talk about her parents or what she bought from the store. He was always interested in those things, clothes and stuff like that. His father thought it unmanly of him but when he was with his mom, rattling on about it, he didn’t care what he thought. If the discussion was interesting enough, he paid no mind to the consequences, to his father’s shaking head and his reprimanding glances at his wife.

His father’s birthday was in a couple of days, Ruki realized. Should he call he wondered. But as soon as the idea crept up into his mind, he pushed it away. Of course not.

“Wow, a rare species,” a girl suddenly said snapping Ruki out of his reverie. She stood in “line” behind him, wearing an old Sex Pistols shirt and black cloth pants with red patches sewn on them.

“What?” he gave her a queer look.

“A boy. At a Visual Kei concert. Rare. Very rare my friend.”

Ruki laughed. The girl wasn’t at all that pretty but she had a strange attractive quality to her. Maybe it was her confidence, he wondered. “Well, I’m not like most boys,” he said with a flirtatious smile.

Seeing it on his face, she raised her eyebrows surprised. “I see! That took you two seconds to start flirting with me.”

He giggled and looked away from her all the while mentally cussing himself out for being so rash. Now, he was going to have to suffer her feminine wrath.

“Don’t sweat it,” she said. “I don’t get hit on very much. Maybe some girls might bust a tit over it but me, I stand back and like a boy in the crowd at a VK concert, stare in awe at it.”

“I’m Ruki,” he said, extending his hand.

“What kind of name is that?” she shook it.

Holding onto her hand, he replied “It’s a stage name.”

“In a band?”

“Was. Looking for members, well one to be exact.”

“Drummer? It’s always the drummer,” she smirked and with much effort, slid her hand away from his.

“You don’t like me very much, do you?” he pouted and looked away, pulling out all the cute.

“It’s not that. You’re adorable as hell and if I wasn’t taken, I’d jump on that,” she laughed.

“Taken?” he sighed. “Everyone is taken,” he said more to himself than to her. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Reita pulling out a cigarette from a newly bought pack. “HEY!” he shouted at him happily.

“RUKI!!” he smiled and walked up to them. “What are you doing here?”

“Scouting out the drummers,” he gave him a bubbly smirk.

“Ohhh,” Reita nodded. Ruki could tell by the look on his face that he was thinking that he ought to be doing that too. “Well, Kameyo wanted to check out the bands,” he gestured to the girl Ruki was just flirting with.

“Ka..me..” he dragged his eyes to her face, a feeling of mild horror overwhelmed him.

“Seems you two already met,” Reita smiled, completely innocent and in the dark.

“Your fiancé?” Ruki clarified.

“Yup!” Reita rested his hands on his waist. He tried his best to be happy about the situation but he couldn’t help but feel a bit shaken. He knew that their meeting was inevitable but at the same time, there was a little part of him that wished that they would never have to speak to each other.

“Okay, what’s going on?” Kameyo asked firmly. She could tell by Reita’s mannerisms that something was up.

“Um…” Reita looked up at Ruki’s face as if he were searching for confirmation. “Well, do you remember when I told you about that one guy…you know…”

“That boy you used to be in love with?” Kameyo said as if there was nothing embarrassing or sensitive about it.

Reita bit his lip. “Yeah, well, this is him. This is Ruki,” he gestured toward him.

“Ohhhhh,” she was very dramatic about it, nodding her head and staring hard at Ruki’s face, a small amused smile on her lips. “You don’t say.”

“Hi,” Ruki laughed. “You’re the one who stole my boyfriend,” he joked at her.

Reita stiffened. He wasn’t expecting that. He sure as hell wasn’t expecting there to be a strange connection between the two as if they were old friends, sharing an inside joke. He looked back and forth between them feeling a bit jealous and left out.

“I can lend him to you during the weekends. His stupidity can be tiring,” she laughed.

“It can be, can’t it?”

“HEY!” Reita interjected.

“See what I mean?” she tipped her head toward him and folded her arms.

“There’s no handling him,” Ruki shook his head. Like her, he folded his arms with playful disapproval.

“Umm…you two…technically aren’t supposed to get along,” he rubbed the back of his neck. He was like a confused puppy.

“We’re special, rare, unique little creatures, little Akira nice guy, alright?” she booped him on the top of his head. “You aren’t bitch enough to be in these circles.”

“Apparently,” he narrowed his eyes at her and started to fix his hair.

“This is so wrong and all but…” Kameyo smiled evilly. “I wouldn’t mind seeing you two kiss. Of course, I know, emotional baggage.”

“I might steal him back if I do,” Ruki laughed.

“I’d love to watch you try. No really, I would.”

“PLEASE STOP!” Reita interjected once more. “Enough, enough, enough,” he physically inserted himself between the two. “This is beginning to freak me out.”

“Poor Rei rei,” Ruki said, getting to his tip toes and fixing his hair for him.

Folding his arms, he sighed “I wanted you two to get along…but not this well.”

“Baby, if I didn’t want you, I’d get with him,” she winked at Ruki.

“WHAT?!” Reita turned and looked at her sharply, bring his hands down to this sides.

“Yeah, and if I didn’t want you too Reita, I’d get with her,” he laughed.

“Hey!” Kameyo pointed a finger at Ruki’s cute face. “If you even dare to touch him….” She narrowed her eyes. “I’d be really happy about it,” she smiled evilly.

“Okay, okay, okay,” Reita said raising his hands into the air as if he were giving up. “Please just tell me what’s going on.”

“We’re waiting in line,” Ruki said matter-of-factly.

“And I’m saying that if Ruki wanted to cut me and get a closer seat, I wouldn’t mind watching from afar.”

“Kameyo,” Reita folded his arms and narrowed his eyes. She would stop at nothing to make a joke.

“Poor Rei Rei,” Ruki said getting to his tip toes and placing a kiss on his cheek.

“Wait! Do that again. I have my camera,” she pretended to go search for one. In all actuality, she was joking.

“I hate you both,” Reita sighed, defeated.

“Then go marry Kai,” Kameyo joked.

“KAI!” Ruki clapped his hands together and laughed. “Remember when we used to call him Mr. Gay Favors?”

“What?” Kameyo leaned forward interested.

“We used to call Kai Mr. Gay Favors as a joke since everyone was trying to squeeze some action from him.”

“I bet,” she chuckled.

“Kameyo, don’t even think about talking nasty about Kai,” Reita pointed a finger at her.

She lifted up her hands. “Okay!”

“I love your girlfriend, Reita,” Ruki giggled.

Looking at him from the corner of his eyes, Reita shook his head.

It was late when they arrived at Uruha’s apartment. He slowly opened the door, making sure not to wake his sister. Stepping into the dark, he ran his hands along the wall to direct his steps. “If I turn the light on, it might wake Kumiko up,” he said to Aoi in a soft whisper.

“How can you see anything?” Aoi whispered behind him.

“Just hold my hand,” he replied. When he felt his hand wrap around his own, a deep sense of peace came over him. His skin touching his in the dark. The silence of intimacy. He felt as if he could dissolve into the bright feeling inside of him. And as he led him along, towards his room, he felt as if in the black of the night, his glowing heart inside him was like a moon.

He opened the door to his room.

“Should we turn the lights on?” Aoi whispered.

“No, I like it like this.”

Uruha hadn’t let go of his hand. He turned around and facing him, quickly pressed himself against him, chest to chest, brow to brow. In the faint light that trickled in from the streetlights outside, Aoi could see the glimmer in his eyes as the pupils wide in the dark, shimmered like two black stones. They wrapped their arms around one another.

“Talk to me,” Uruha whispered.

“About what?”

“I don’t know. Anything,” he smiled.

“I’m too tired to talk,” Aoi replied. It wasn’t that he was physically tired-that wasn’t the case at all. It was rather that he was too weary of spirit to speak. Giving Uruha what little he could, he felt as if he were battling against the thing inside of him that had given up and it was like crawling out of grave.

Uruha, knowing him better than he thought, instead of conceding, instead of just kissing him and dragging him to the bed said “You have to try.”

“Try?” he smiled bitterly.

“You have to try. I know you still love me,” he lifted up his hands and placed them on his face, his thumbs gliding across Aoi’s mouth.

“Such confidence.” He tried to be funny but instead, his words came out sad and lost.

“Ask me who you love?” Uruha pressed. His grip on Aoi became tighter, firmer.

“Uruha…please…let’s just…let’s just have fun okay?”

He wasn’t going to budge “Say it.”

Aoi sighed deeply. “You know what I love?” he asked as if repeating a line from an old script. It felt like looking at a photo of a lost love one, looking back at his childhood like that. It seemed so lost now, in the blinding beautiful light of a summer day. And it made his heart tighten and he grew nervous. He felt himself trembling in Uruha’s grasp. Great sadness is frightening but it was so much easier to look at that in the face, like he had been doing his whole life but to look in the face of great happiness was beyond frightening, it was like standing on a big mountain and looking out at the world around you, its immensity overflowing over you.

“What?” Uruha whispered.

He shut his eyes tightly, building up his courage. Opening them up again, he replied “Ducky Baby.” The words came out like a trembling wave. He could feel his emotions inch up his skin and envelop him.

Uruha pressed his lips against his and kissed him softly and letting his hands fall slowly down to Aoi’s, he grabbed them once more and started to pull him towards the bed.

“I don’t want to have sex right now,” Aoi said.

“You don’t?”

“No, I just…” he sighed.

“Okay,” Uruha smiled. Lying down on the bed, he pulled Aoi downward next to him.

“I’m sorry. I know you were looking forward to that,” he smiled sadly. Was it sad? He couldn’t quite tell anymore. He felt that his whole being was made up of vulnerable tenderness.

“It’s okay,” Uruha snuggled up next to him and rested his head on his chest. Feeling that it wasn’t close enough, he pressed himself against him once more and wrapped his leg and arm around him. Aoi smiling at how awkward and sweet he was, turned on his side, disrupting Uruha and wrapping his arms around him, squeezed tightly. “I want this,” Uruha said with a sweet smile.

“Yeah?” Aoi lifted up hand and ran it through his soft hair.

“I want to fall asleep next to you.”

“Since when did you say such corny stuff?” Aoi teased. He however, was feeling his chest fluttering inside. He was becoming giddy it seemed and at the slightest joke, he felt he would start giggling.

“It sounds cliché, I know,” Uruha as if it were another action, another moment altogether, ran the tip of his finger around Aoi’s lips as he traced their shape, paying extra attention to the v-like pattern of his upper lip. “But I mean it. It always sounds stupid until you mean it.”

“You want to wake up next to me too?” Aoi smiled.

He nodded cutely.

“I love you, Uruha. I love you.”

“Say it again,” He smiled his baby smile.

“I love you, Uruha.”

“Again.”

“I love you, Uruha,” he closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against his.

“Again.”

“I love you, Uruha.”

“Now, say it like you are having an orgasm.”

“Eh?” Aoi playfully poked him on the side causing him to jump a bit. “I LOVE YOU URUHA!” he said using his most dramatic porn star impression.

“You’ll wake Kumiko!” Uruha laughed, grabbing at him as if that would stop him.

“OHHH!!! URUHA!!!!” he faked moaned, throwing his head back and forth in mock pleasure. “I LOVE YOU!!!! I LOOOOVVVVVEEEE YOU!!!!”

“Stop!” Uruha laughed and went to cover his mouth with his hand.

“URUHA! OH! OH! OH! I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU!” he bellowed out, pushing Uruha’s hand away and screaming it like a wolf howling at the moon.

“SHUT THE FUCK UP FAGS!” Kumiko screamed from her bedroom, a hint of laughter her voice.

“Now look what you did!” Uruha giggled and nestled against Aoi’s neck sweetly, laying upon the sensitive skin a ripple of soft kisses.
