Character Name: [actually lacks a first name apparently] Sasaki
Character Series: Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Character Age: 17
Background: Haruhi wiki. She's from the end of Volume 9, the current stopping point of the series, and the beta-timeline, where she's more prominently figured.
Personality: Sasaki is extremely intelligent and almost pathologically skeptical and level-headed. She's got the world figured out, so to speak, and she accepts it in all its (apparent) banality. She finds out about the existence of time travelers, aliens, and espers, and provisionally accepts it as a hypothesis, later confirming it by Kyon's reaction to the news (or lack thereof)--but despite this, her biggest concern still seems to be getting into her desired university. After being told that she may be the proper wielder of reality-altering powers, she calmly states that she isn't interested: she says she is 'a below average mortal' (this, however, is probably in the properly-humble manner of Japanese culture rather than an accurate assessment) and that "I will definitely end up with some mental problem" if she took control of Haruhi's powers. She states that she has "no strong desires" and is "not too interested in myself"--she has, in other words, no problem with being just one single person among twenty million others--unlike a certain excitable brigade leader.
In other words, she is in many ways the anti-Haruhi. She doesn't want the world to be more exciting, she's not interested in aggrandizing herself--in fact, she is regularly self-deprecatory--and she wants to lead a 'normal' life. Yet she's far from normal herself: as mentioned in the wiki, she's always been perceived as strange, which is why Kyon has a reputation for liking strange girls. She claims not to have many friends at her high school: "All I have is these two. Because no one else would get close to me," she says of her friends, the decidedly abnormal alien interface Suou Kuyoh and esper Tachibana Kyoko. Despite this, Kyon claims she is more sociable than he is (and Haruhi agrees), making it seem like this is probably a self-deprecatory statement. She is far more cool-headed and philosophical than a normal high school student; she isn't interested in things like her appearance ("I've never understood the reasoning behind making the question of whether one is attractive or unattractive an issue in this life.") or feelings of love "It's like a kind of mental illness!"), though she's certainly an astute observer of human behavior (and probably most other things, too): she still recalls their mutual classmates's psychology, for example, knowing how one of them will react ("Kunikida acted exactly like Sasaki said he would", Kyon notes) and dispassionately analyzing another's continued unrequited affections for a girl of their year.
Yet, of course, many people interpreted her relationship with Kyon as romantic. Though this is somewhat open, I would describe it like this: Kyon certainly seemed to be interested, telling her at one point how attractive she was, and having scenes with her--giving her bicycle rides to the cram school, eating lunch with her there--that Koizumi describes as "a pure and innocent middle school love story". But Sasaki later says to Kyon: "I never did anything that may have made anyone like me. I never showed affection to anyone either. You are probably the one who understands that the most, right, Kyon?" That is, Sasaki knows that Kyon had an interest in her and intentionally turned him down. Kyon's narration is true in saying that they never had "that wonderful feeling of a boy-girl romantic relationship", but that it doesn't necessarily follow that he didn't have an unrequited interest in the odd girl who can talk her way in circles around issues both philosophical and social, and who observes so minutely that she (supposedly) guesses that Kyon doesn't like his nickname from a .2 second delay in his response when being called by it.
However, we can't say that Sasaki is entirely a self-assured rationalist. All of this cool observation is an intentional choice by her--and yet she often seems to deny the efficacy of free will, resorting to biological/neurological explanations like the .2 second delay, or her explication of love ("It's an evolutionary instinct to reproduce"). Her observation above, for example--that Kyon dislikes his nickname--would be more believable yet less impressive if it were simply an observation that he winces when it's used, or even her prior knowledge of his dislike, but she chooses to explain it with the idea that his brain takes longer to process his nickname. Haruhi says that she feels "artificial" in a way, and Kyon believes Sasaki would agree, or at least take this as a compliment: her rationalism, her desire to abandon sentiment and emotion, is not a 'natural' phenomenon. Instead, it reflects her deep-seated goal to accept and understand the world around her, whether or not it requires her to stay at a careful rational distance from it, so to speak.
Her recent confrontation with the idea that the world is not in fact as banal in its normality as she thought seems not to have left her affected outwardly--"I really do not want this matter to drag on for too long," she says. Why? "The next national mock examinations are coming up soon." But she must be left revising her theories to account for these new phenomena. The same would go for her exploration of her mysterious transfer to this world. This position would be where I'd take her from.
Abilities: Her subconscious mind creates 'closed spaces', in which, however, nothing happens, and which are only accessible to a few espers--so it's a singularly useless power.
