I don't handle the heat well, and I'm not fond of theme parks, so I don't really have much motivation to go to
Florida. Both of my trips there were in December, one over Christmas break of my sophomore year of high school, and one during an extended pre-Christmas break in 2010.
The first trip was to
Fort Lauderdale to visit my two sets of great-aunts & uncles. We drove all the way from North Dakota to Florida and back, a trip which included what is probably the longest single day I've spent in a car as a passenger. We stopped at the Rocket Garden at
Kennedy Space Center, but otherwise didn't do much that were ridiculously touristy, unless counting all the billboards for
Ron Jon Surf Shop is a tourist activity. Seriously, they had one every couple of hundred yards from the Florida border all the way south. We did also do a day trip to the
Everglades (alligators everywhere!).
Last December I got the company time share in
Naples for the week before Christmas. We hung out by the pool, went to the beach, and generally relaxed, with one side trip to Fort Lauderdale to visit a great aunt.
This December I've got the company time share in the Orlando area, but we're still probably not going to do any theme parks.
There are multiple pro baseball teams in Florida, so I could probably be talked into going back for that. On the other hand, the Rays have the ugliest park in baseball (or so it's claimed), and Florida is always miserably hot, so those stadiums aren't really high on the priority list.
Spring training would be more interesting, but the Cactus League holds more appeal for me than the Grapefruit League.
Are there any other non-Disney things to do in Florida that you recommend? The
Keys, maybe.
