egghead note: past is when yunho was a stud muffin until he found out about his condition. present is during the time when the couple met minseok and yoosu and everyone else. future is three years after that, when minseok is already eight years old... and the years after that.
present
“Yunnie…”
“Yes baby?”
“My birthday is in a few days.”
Closing his laptop shut, Yunho turned his head a little to pay attention to his husband who, as soon as he sat on the bed, has taken the liberty to wrap himself all over his back and stayed there almost unmoving. “We’re having party for that, remember? Is there anything you want for a gift?”
Jaejoong sighed, finally detaching himself from the other only to crawl over and take a seat on Yunho’s lap. “That’s the thing. I don’t want any gift. Yunhoyah, you have given me so much already and I don’t want to ask for more. All I need is you Minseok.”
“That’s sweet.” said Yunho with a smile. He took Jaejoong’s hand in his and kissed it ever so lovingly. “Are you sure?”
“Never been sure.”
The party was in no way grand. It was rather intimate as only his family and closest friends were invited. Everyone he adored was there, even Minseok’s boyfriend. They may not have started on the right foot, but as years passed, Jaejoong realised and saw how Luhan genuinely cared for his son. Luhan was disgustingly in love with Minseok as much as he was with Yunho.
“Happy birthday, Dada!” greeted Luhan enthusiastically, handing him a messily wrapped box. The birthday boy looked at the present in amusement before pulling the younger man in a hug.
“Thanks, Lulu.” It was two years ago when Luhan started calling him Dada and Yunho, Baba, claiming they’d eventually be his parents when he marries Minseok so he might as well call them such names. Although they were too young to be thinking of marriage, Yunho convinced him to just let them be. If Luhan is already thinking that far ahead to consider tying the knot, it must only mean he’s taking Minseok seriously. It may not be a solid assurance because no one knows what the future will bring for the young couple, but it’s the present that matters. And right now, they seem to be more than content with each other. “Where’s my baby?”
Luhan sighed. “Dada please smack him on the butt for me please. I got berated. And I quote, how bleeping dare you Luhan you have no idea how much I hate you right now. You are so bleeping insensitive I can’t believe you did this to me you dumbass. Get your ass out of my face I can’t stand seeing you right now, unquote. Now ask me what I did.”
All Jaejoong could do was blink in surprise. Minseok rarely cursed. When he did, it meant he’s genuinely pissed. He didn’t curse just for the heck of it. Only when Luhan nudged him on the side did he respond with a confused “Eh?”
“Wake him up. Can you believe him?!” replied the Chinese man with a huff. “Now he’s probably telling me off to Baba.”
“Which is what you’re doing right now, only to me.”
Luhan grinned. “Exactly. But you see, it was barely my fault! He asked me to wake him up so we won’t be late for the party. It was even him who insisted he’d sleep over at my house when the original plan was me sleeping over here.”
The older of the two reached out to pat the sulking boy on the head but stopped midway when Luhan’s previous words finally sunk in. He stared at him in horror. “Why was your ass on his face?!”
“Jung Minseok!” Jaejoong demanded, making a beeline towards his son with Luhan in tow. The boy in question was in the process of giving his other father a hug when Jaejoong pulled him away, grabbing him by the arm. “Why was Luhan’s ass on your face?!”
"Wha- what the hell, Jae?!" The thirty-five year old Yunho spluttered. "That was uncalled for!" It was not the fact that his son and his boyfriend were allegedly engaged in an indecent activity, but Jaejoong grabbed Minseok a little too hard. Their son was visibly wincing at the tight grip which his father failed to notice. Yunho detached his husband's hand from their son's arm and sighed. "You're overreacting. The boys probably didn't mean it literally."
"I didn't." Minseok finally spoke, not the least bit mad at his father for hurting him. Given that Jaejoong always acted on impulse, he knew he didn't mean it. "It was an expression, Papa." he explained. "You know I rarely get pissy when woken up, but my idiot of a boyfriend thought it was a brilliant idea to pour ice cold water on my crotch. There was literally a bag of ice cubes on the bucket and his AC was on full blast. I almost got hypothermia!"
Whatever Luhan had to say was cut off when both Yunho and Jaejoong smacked him upside the head. Well, he deserved it.
A wide smile graced Jaejoong's lips upon seeing an eight-year old girl running towards his direction. He open his arms widely and was about to crouch to catch her but she was a little faster and collided on to his crotch. He groaned in pain.
"Gayoungah!" The familiar raspy voice scolded the little girl who clung tightly on to Jaejoong's leg. Junsu wheeled himself faster to the pair. "Sorry about that, Jj. The princess is just all happy to see you."
Jaejoong smiled, scooping Gayoung up in his arms once the pain subsided. "Appreciated. I'm happy to see her too. And you, of course, my cutie." He reached out to pinch Junsu's cheek gently. A frown decorated his face when he realised someone's absense. "And Yoochun is where?" The frown got deeper by the second. "Don't tell me he-"
"He dropped us off but he'll be back. Remember those cupcakes he was raving about? He picked up our orders so you could get to taste them." The birthday boy nodded and finally smiled. Junsu grabbed his hand and squeezed it. "Don't worry. He knows his priorities now ever since you scolded him on his birthday. And now that we have Gayoung, it's always family first for him. He has really changed, Jj."
Jaejoong's heart swelled at those words. It's a given that they are all one big family, but hearing them come from Junsu inexplicably made him happier than he already was. He was thrilled to know that Yoochun has gotten better and better at the family thing. None of them ever wanted a repeat of that moment when Jaejoong confronted Yoochun at the hospital more than a decade ago.
Too overwhelmed with emotions, he leaned down to give Junsu a kiss on the forehead. He's always had a soft spot for him. "Keep that pretty smile on your face, Junsuyah. You deserve everything that's good in the world." After all these years, seeing Junsu's family complete never ceased to get him into tears.
"Don't cry, Uncle Jj." Junsu's nickname for him rubbed off on his daughter. Gayoung wiped Jaejoong's lone tear with her stubby fingers and beamed. "You keep your pretty smile too uncle, like Papa."
It wasn't long until Yoochun arrived bearing the cupcakes he was obviously excited about. Changmin and Yoobi followed soon after with their twins. While Jaejoong and Yunho's mothers, along with Jihye, were busy with the food, everyone else was in the living room having a chat. Jaejoong wanted to help with the preparation but he was kicked out of his own kitchen by his two mothers. He didn't even bother protesting as he knew he wouldn't even stand a chance.
"So Jaejoong, how does it feel like to be thirty six?" Changmin bluntly asked.
"Like I'm on my twenties," replied Jaejoong. "I still want to hit you so hard."
He leaned against Yunho's chest and sighed, lacing their fingers. It felt nice to have all his friends and family gathered like this. Having them all on his birthday was as good as a birthday present. He looked to his right and Changmin kept on glancing at his wife - who was entertaining the kids - every once in a while as if she was going to disappear if he looked away. On his left was Junsu on Yoochun's lap, the latter massaging his sore legs.
Yunho, on the other hand, found an opportunity from the momentary silence to talk to Yoochun about the charity event at the hospital he's working at which was organised by Nana's agency. Jaejoong tilted his head upwards and stared at his husband. Yunho was still that gorgeous, down-to-earth and fluffy man he met roughly seventeen years ago.
"You're crying." He snapped out of his reverie. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't realise tears were already streaming down his cheeks. His husband was looking at him worriedly, hands cupping his cheeks. "What's wrong, babe?"
Jaejoong smiled that pretty smile of his. "I love you so much, is all." Because no other words can describe how utterly lucky and grateful he is to have met and loved someone like Yunho.
"I know you said you didn't want a gift..." Yunho trailed off. After lunch, they all gathered once again in the living room to hand their presents to the birthday boy one. Gift wrappers were scattered all over the floor. It was messy, but none of them minded.
"Yunhoyah..."
Yunho stood up from the couch and slowly walked towards the front door. Jaejoong and the others watched in anticipation. "But I know how bad you wanted this one. You never told me anything but I could just see it in your eyes everytime we pay a visit."
"No..." Having an idea of what it might be, Jaejoong started tearing up for the third time that day. He shook his head, not because he didn't want it but because he couldn't believe Yunho would actually do that for him. "Are you-"
Before he could finish off his sentence, Yunho twisted the doorknob open and swung the door open revealing a teenaged girl about Minseok's age with jet black hair and full bangs framing her face perfectly. Behind her was Minseok and Luhan, grinning.
"Byulyi..." Yunho said with a grin, though his eyes were starting to sting with tears. "She's ours now." He escorted the smiling girl to Jaejoong who threw herself at him. "It was a whole lot easier having her because we have Minseok. They saw how well we raised our baby."
"Why yes you did." Minseok piped in, putting an arm over his Mama Yunho. "Best parents in the world!" he declared with so much pride and joy. His words managed to make Jaejoong sob even more uncontrollably. Everyone was either crying or smiling happily. "So papa, please don't be mad at me for leaving in the middle of lunch. I did it for the good of all. And now I have a baby sister."
Byulyi was eleven when the couple first met her. She was in the same orphanage as Minseok's. Unlike Minseok, she was very active; played around with everyone and was a very jolly person, kind of like Junsu. Maybe it was that and her similar features to Minseok that got Jaejoong drawn into her more and more as time passed, but she definitely had her own personality.
Initially, Jaejoong was content with just visiting her during his and Yunho's free time, though when he spent more time with her, he slowly but surely fell in love with her like he did with Minseok. He wanted her to be a part of their family. He wanted a daughter like her. He wanted her to be his daughter.
But he never talked to Yunho about it, never planned to. It wasn't plausible, he thought. Yunho probably wouldn't agree as adopting another child is a huge responsibility. It was nothing like buying a new stuffed toy. Convinced that the love of his life wouldn't like the idea, he dismissed it and forced himself to be satisfied with the monthly visits. And it was satisfying, to say the least, but he eventually wanted more. He did not want to be Byulyi's weekend parent anymore; he wanted to be her parent.
"I could tell what's going in there, beautiful." He jumped a bit in surprise when he felt Yunho tapping him on the head. "Stop thinking. It's alright, she's here now. I want her to be with us as much as you do. Minseok wants her too. We're going to be happy."
Byulyi was still clinging on to Jaejoong's arm when she nodded in agreement. "Thank you for choosing me. For wanting me." she said with so much sincerity, her hold on Jaejoong tightening a little. She squeaked when Minseok, her new brother, pulled her away from their father.
"Come on, I'll show you to our room. We'll share for now, but mama will work on your own room soon. He..." The siblings disappeared on the hallway with Luhan following closely behind them.
Jaejoong watched the trio's retreating back before looking on the couch, expecting to find his friends but found none. "Huh?"
Yunho chuckled. "They all excused themselves when you were having a moment with Byulyi. It's a private thing, they said. But they're all at the playground. Changmin said they'll be back in a few hours when you're coherent enough." He pressed a kiss on the shorter man's forehead. "Happy birthday, my puffy-eyed love."
"It's all your fault!" Jaejoong replied, hitting him on the chest with a fist. "But really, thank you. You made me even more happy. I'm just so-"
A finger was gently pressed on his lips. "You talk too much. You know I take thanks in the form of kisses."
Just as their lips touched, a squeal echoed throughout the house, but it went unheard by the couple who was too engrossed in thanking each other. With Luhan's arm wrapped around his waist, Minseok grinned and ruffled his gaping sister's hair. "Welcome to the family."
