Part 18 The following morning, Kai was scheduled to work at the Moon Lady. Sleep deprived and exhausted from staying up all night practicing, he dragged himself into the restaurant. As the cook, he had to get there before anyone else to get things started. The first thing he did was make the coffee and heat up some water for the patrons that would prefer tea.
Setting the kettle on the stove, Kai seemed to be in a daze. When Mr. Hirano’s voice pierced through the thick cold silence of the lonely spring morning, he nearly jumped out of his skin from shock and surprise. “Kai,” the chubby man said.
“Holy!” the young man pressed a hand against his chest. “Mr. Hirano! You scared me!” he laughed.
But instead of returning his friendly salutation, Hirano just stared at him expressionless. “D’Marcus quit last night and I have an inkling it has something to do with you.”
“What?” Kai tilted his head. “He quit. Why?”
“He said that he really didn’t need the money and that he could use the time to study. I don’t buy it. I know something is up. Kai,” he narrowed his eyes angrily. “What did you do?” It was well-known that Mr. Hirano was very fond of D. Like Haru, he would have been more than pleased if he were to join his family and become his son-in-law.
Kai looked back down at the kettle and bit his bottom lip. There was no getting around it. Mr. Hirano was right. He probably was the reason why D had upped and quit. “I think I know why,” he said to him. “After this shift, I’ll go and call him.”
“Call him now,” Hirano demanded. “I don’t care if you have to leave the restaurant and drag him back.”
Kai was a bit taken aback by how determined he was. “Yes, sir,” he said. Pulling out his cell phone, he searched for D’Marcus’ house number. As he listened to the ring, the memory of yesterday’s confrontation in the staff room came back to him and he felt ashamed of the way that he had spoken to him, telling him outright that he wasn’t gay as if he were accusing D of having such feelings for him.
“Hello?” Mr. Johnson answered.
“Good morning, Mr. Johnson,” Kai said with forced good humor. “Is D’Marcus home?”
“Funny you should ask that. He is actually moving into his own apartment today.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah, he’s probably there right now loading things in. I’m sure he could use a hand if you aren’t doing anything,” Mr. Johnson said amiably.
“I see…what’s the address?” Kai asked. He couldn’t believe he was actually going to do this, go to his apartment unexpectedly. He knew that if had spoken to D over the phone, that D would either avoid him and not take the call or dodge it some way. He was that sort of person; when confronted, he usually looked away or quickly softened things.
Kai however, felt that he needed to apologize face to face. It wasn’t Hirano’s demands that made him want to get in contact with D. As he thought about how he treated him yesterday, Kai felt that it was imperative that he make things right.
Mr. Johnson reading it off of paper he had written it down on, read it back to Kai who quickly finding a napkin and a pen scribbled it down. “Thank you,” Kai said. “You have a good day, Mr. Johnson.”
“You too, Uke!” he said with his characteristic enthusiasm.
As soon as Kai hung up, Hirano chimed “Well?”
“I’m going to go and pay him a visit,” he explained, looking down at the address once more before shoving it into his pocket.
“So, it was your fault then, huh?”
“Yeah, I think so,” he conceded with a sigh. “But, I’ll make things right Mr. Hirano,” Kai said with a slight bow.
“It’s about Haru, isn’t it?” Hirano folded his arms, resting the forearms on his big round belly. “You two are fighting over her, aren’t you?”
Kai was reluctant to respond. “I suppose you can say that.”
“Well, may the best man win,” Hirano said, turning around. Kai knew that “best man” referred to D’Marcus in his eyes. He wasn’t sure how he should feel about it. Once in awhile, he was alright with people referring to his inferiority to D’Marcus but after a while, it began to grate at his nerves.
“I’ll be back,” Kai replied, trying his best to mask his anger.
By train, it took him 20 minutes to find the apartment building. Naturally, it was located near the University D attended. Walking toward it, the streets were surprisingly crowded with all types of college kids, some Japanese, some foreign. A pretty Caucasian girl, finding any random reason to talk to him, stopped him and asked him in broken Japanese if he knew where the student center was. “I’m sorry. I don’t go here. I’m just looking for a friend.” Realizing that he was in a rush and that he wasn’t at all interested in her, she smiled disappointedly, said thank you, and walked away.
Going to 4th floor via the stairs, Kai looked for the right apartment number. Quickly finding 4B, he walked up to the door and taking a deep breath, prepared himself. Don’t be angry, Kai, he thought. There is no reason to be mad at him. Remember that he’s a good guy, a bright guy, he looks at buildings as if they were like people, he says beautiful all the time and means it. And just when he felt himself getting carried away with D’s charms, he knocked on his door.
“Coming,” he heard him call from inside. Kai took another deep breath. Soon, the door opened and D was standing there wearing a thin white tank top exposing his large muscled arms. Behind him, his apartment was in disarray. Boxes were everywhere, books spilled out onto the floor. “Kai,” he said, surprised. He certainly did not expect him to show up at his door.
“Hey,” he smiled, his dimple appearing on his face cutely.
“What are you doing here?”
“Um…” Kai looked down. He expected for him to invite him in. But why should he? Kai thought. He had no reason to.
And just as the thought crossed his mind, D, always polite, stepped aside and asked him to come in. “Would you like something to drink? Tea?” Even though he was an American, he was aware of the Japanese custom.
“No thank you. I need to talk to you,” he stepped inside.
D shut the door behind him. “Is this about the restaurant?”
“Hirano is upset about you leaving….and,” he looked down once more. “I know it’s my fault that you quit.”
“That’s not true,” D shook his head. “Well, not entirely.”
“Then why?” Kai made eye contact with him as if challenging him for the truth.
D’Marcus naturally looked away. “Well, first off, I don’t like Haru very much. I don’t like how she insists on believing she likes me. To be frank, she doesn’t even know me. And then, the fact that you like her so much and-and the fact that you basically called me gay yesterday, only makes things so awkward, I don’t think I can comfortably be there and on top of that, those stupid Yamada brothers,” he folded his arms and stared at the floor.
“I’m sorry about how I talked to you,” Kai apologized. His tone was earnest and sincere. “I…I know we don’t know each other that well but…I think of you as a friend and I spoke out of anger yesterday and I was wrong to. I can get a bit…competitive sometimes…I don’t want that to ruin our friendship, okay?”
D licked his lips as he thought about what Kai was saying. “Right,” he nodded, still looking away. “I’m not mad or upset at you…it’s just kind of…awkward.”
“Honestly D, I don’t care if you want or don’t want to have sex with me-”
“Who said anything about that?” he laughed uncomfortably and walked into the apartment away from Kai.
“Doesn’t matter,” he sighed. “That’s not the point. The point is it’s not a big deal-”
“For you, you mean,” D turned and finally glancing quickly at him, pointed as if he found a small clause in his argument. Everything about his body language was tense, the way he had raised his shoulders and held his arms to himself.
“What?” Kai didn’t understand what he was saying. He followed him into the apartment.
“If I wanted you like that, it would be a problem for me wouldn’t it? It would be a big deal, right?”
Kai paused to think about what he was saying. “Yeah, I suppose so,” he sighed. “D…I’m confused. Tell me what I need to do to make it right.”
“I’m just saying…that’s all…”
“Are we friends?”
“We’re friends.”
“I don’t believe you.” From the mere physical looks of the two, it would appear that D was the more dominant male but their personalities were vastly different in this regard. Kai was more forceful, more competitive, more aggressive. D, however was placid, calm and gentle.
“I don’t know how to convince you,” he sat down on the couch. He was surrounded by nondescript boxes. They seemed like random props. Leaning forward and linking his hands together, he stared forward blankly.
For a whole minute it seemed the two of them were consumed in thought and silence. Kai walking over to him, sat down next to him and saying in a relaxed voice “She agreed to go out with me.”
“Kai, you’re blinded by your feelings.”
“Do you honestly believe that she is no good?” he stared at the blank wall in front of them.
“She said she wanted something much more than you.”
“Well, I convinced her otherwise,” Kai replied.
“You don’t get it,” he said suddenly in English.
“What?” Kai turned and looked at him.
“I said that you don’t understand,” he spoke in slow, enunciated Japanese. “It’s the fact that you had to convince her that means she is no good.” Kai waited for him to go on before he argued with him further. “The fact that she can’t see…Forget it,” he thought against it.
“See what?” Kai was staring at him intensely.
D sighed and shook his head no.
“Man up, D.”
Biting his lip, he shook his head no once more.
“What the hell? Come out with it,” Kai demanded.
“So, you can call me gay again? Fuck,” he turned and looked away.
Kai looked down. He knew what he was trying to say and it filled him with a strange feeling. For some reason, D thought he was beautiful and special and even though he didn’t believe that any of what D thought was true, it still made him feel good to think that someone felt that way. “Thank you,” he said. “You’re delusional but thank you,” he laughed.
The subject became too personal for D; changing it immediately he said “You seem tired.”
“Well, I was up all night practicing.”
“You should wear gloves,” he looked down at Kai’s chapped and callused hands.
“Probably should,” he lifted them up and observed them.
“Ouch, look at all those sores,” D cringed and without even realizing it, grabbed his hand to get a better look at his wounds. “You really should put some Neosporin on these or something. Take better care of yourself.”
As he touched his hand, Kai stared at the side of his face and almost as if his mind were playing jokes on him, his eyes fell down to D’s full thick lips, filling him with a memory of that time in the staff room when he had crawled over to him and kissed him. Just as it was in his habit, D licked his lips and watching him do so, Kai felt a strange hot feeling come over him and he looked away.
“If I leave, what are the chances we’ll see each other again?” Kai said. His words however didn’t seem directed at D at all. It sounded as if he were speaking to himself.
D had let Kai’s hand drop. “That depends on if we are friends or not.” He laughed in spite of himself.
As he watched him, Kai felt a feeling of sensuality come over his senses, a slow aching eroticism as he thought about that kiss, about D’s full lips, about how soft he touched him, almost feminine even. Perhaps, it was daring that made him think like this. He was always attracted to these sorts of things he realized. There was a darkness to it, a mystery even. Soon, he felt a desire creep up in him. It seemed wrong to want something like this and now of all moments, in the early morning hours with this young man who he had only known for several weeks now-and a man so much bigger than him. He was larger, more masculine looking, stronger. Kai knew that if he were to do something with him, if he were to go all the way, he would be penetrated by him. Normally, he would have been frightened by it but right now as if he were possessed by a demon, he felt a curious craving for it.
“D,” Kai said. And when he looked at his face, his light brown eyes staring at him innocently, Kai said “Be honest with me,” his voice was deep and breathy. “Do you want me or not?”
“Kai, why are you asking me that?”
“Just answer me.”
D stared at him as he considered his question. “I don’t…I don’t know,” he looked away embarrassed. “Maybe. I don’t understand it.”
The answer was good enough for him. Turning on the couch to face him, Kai leaned forward and pressing his lips against D’s ear snaked his tongue across its shape. “What are you doing?” he laughed.
Giggling, Kai replied “Being bad.” If he paused to think about what he was doing, what it meant, he would have stopped right then and there but for a man who rarely gave into temptation, who was always diligent, always responsible, reliable, temptation had a special allure, a shadowy side to it, something almost sinister. And it was the fact that it was “bad” that made it harder for him to resist. Yes, if he had paused to think about it, he would have stopped. He would have realized that he was letting his aggressive ways cloud his judgment.
But he didn’t.
The breathing, the wet tongue, the giggles in his ear, immediately turned D on. He bit his lip once more and shifted his body, trying to keep it to himself. “I don’t understand you at all.”
“I don’t understand me either.”
D turned and looked at him. “Are you sure?” he asked him, referring to the sexual passes he was making.
“No, I’m not sure.”
What did they have to lose? D realized. He liked him a lot but he had no special romantic feelings for him, just this strange attraction to his energy, his constant smiling, and to his thin, lithe almost effeminate body. Leaning toward him, he pressed his lips against his and kissed him sensually and slowly. Kai with all his irresistible liveliness kissed him back. Grabbing the thin pieces of cloth that draped over D’s shoulders, he pulled him toward him as he laid back.
Once Kai was lying down on the couch, D pulled away and said in a soft voice “Tell me if you want me to stop, okay?”
Giggling again, Kai replied “I rather you were really rough were me. If I push you away, push me down.”
“You’re crazy,” D shook his head.
“Maybe,” he smiled.
Taking a deep breath, D removed his tank top and lowering himself downward toward Kai, kissed him sensually once more. Unexpectedly, Kai received him warmly only to suddenly bite down hard on his lip. Feeling the sharp pain and the rising of the blood on the tip of his tongue, D pulled away from him. He put his hand to his mouth and removing it, saw that indeed Kai had drawn blood.
“Are you mad at me?” Kai asked.
“You want me to be.”
“But you aren’t,” he smiled.
D wasn’t sure what he should do. In one way, he didn’t like this rough game that Kai insisted on playing. He didn’t like force or roughness. But then again, he wanted him-well, he wanted the sweet, cute Kai. “Quit acting like this,” he said to him.
“Maybe you are,” Kai giggled.
D was close to getting up but Kai sensing his apprehension, sat up and bringing his mouth to D’s wounded lip, kissed him softly there as if to make it feel better. Kai could taste the blood and it only excited him more. He pressed his body against his.
“You’re a liar, Kai,” he said to him. His words seemed to want to push him away but his hands however rested on his waist.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, you aren’t.”
Giggling again, Kai ran his hand down his chest. Before he could reach his crotch, D softly pushed Kai down and grabbing his hands, pinned them above his head. He kissed his neck and lifting up his shirt and running his hands up Kai’s chest, quickly brought them down to edge of Kai’s pants. He repeatedly kissed his neck, working his mouth around the circumference of his throat as he undid the fastening to his jeans and pulled them down.
Kai moaned his name and tried to wrestle out his grip. D, doing as Kai wanted him to, held him down harder and with quick, unintentionally rough motions, he grabbed Kai’s shoulder and turned him onto his stomach.
He didn’t really know what he was doing and so, finally taking his own pants off, he pushed himself inside of Kai. The pain was excruciating and Kai let out a loud, startled scream. Pressing his chest against his back, D whispered to him “Are you okay?”
“It hurts,” he cringed. And just when he was about to pull away from him, Kai grabbed his hand and said urgently “Don’t stop.” It was more painful than he thought it would be-well in fact, he hadn’t thought about it all. He just followed his desires and instincts as they came to him. But this was more than he could have imagined. It shot up through his entire body but at the same time that it was agonizing, it was also pleasurable and for Kai, that intertwining mingling of pain and pleasure was the most gratifying.
Wrapping his hand around Kai’s throat, D kissed him softly on the neck. Every time he rocked himself inside of him, Kai would let out a small high pitched moan. Its repetition increased the desire in D. It was cute and charming. Burying his face into Kai’s silky jet black hair, he closed his eyes.
[A/N So I originally had two scenes in this post but since LJ told me that it was too large, I removed the second one. Normally, I would put a section 2, since the next part is Aoiha but since I'm so behind, I'll give it to you all tomorrow. And I know how some of you may not care for this plot line but hey *shrugs*
Well, I had a really long night last night. I had rehearsal for 11 hours. I didn't leave until 2 AM. I'm sorry for any typos or awkward sentences. I'll fix them when I can. ^^ Just as a warning, I may or may not be able to post for a couple of days after tomorrow since I'm so behind on writing and in other things. Not to mention tired. But I'll keep you all in the loop. I think that the fic really feels set up for the main problems and plot lines so if this was a book, I would say that Part 1 is completed and Part 2 is about to begin ^^]
