30 Wisconsin

Wisconsin is on the most direct route between North Dakota and the east coast, so I've driven through it more times than I can count. This occasionally involved overnight stops in cities such as Eau Claire. A few of those trips were through northern Wisconsin on the way to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but most ran along the highway from Minneapolis to Chicago. Most of these trips were uneventful, although on the way home for Christmas break 2000 tigerlily_blue and I were stranded in the middle of nowhere when our 1985 Honda Accord decided to give up the ghost. After one repair attempt failed our dad drove out to pick us up. That was exciting.

I can only recall three visits to Wisconsin where Wisconsin itself was the intended destination. The first of these was in 1991. We drove east, and my aunt and uncle drove west, and we met in Madison, which had been picked more or less because it was central to our starting locations and looked interesting. This in fact turned out to be true; in particular we spent a lot of time wandering around State Street, which as a 13-year-old from North Dakota I thought was possibly the coolest place ever. Actually, I still think it's pretty cool even now. This included the very first time I had sushi, although I mostly stuck to tempura. My aunt also got my sister a certain blue and purple fedora, which is now one of my very few prize possessions.

I made another trip to Madison as part of my long road trip for jenny31978's wedding in September of 2005. My friend AK and I drove up to visit eirias, who at that time was a doctoral student at UW. This would have been a lot of fun, except that somehow I managed to acquire food poisoning prior to my arrival so I spent most of the trip unconscious. Doh. You'll be happy to know that since then I've returned to Madison to visit eirias again, and this time I wasn't sick in the slightest. That was last fall as my sister and I made our way from Anchorage to Atlanta.

My other planned trip to Wisconsin was a day trip to Milwaukee in 2004 to see a Brewer's game at Miller Park. My friend Harold lived near the art museum, so we walked past that. Before the game we toured the Miller Brewing Company. After the game we had dinner at Mader's Restaurant, which is a local institution and had delicious German food. Finally we at the most interesting themed bar I've ever been in. The that trip was part of 3 baseball games in 3 parks in 3 days, and a full synopsis can be found here.

I would happily return to either Madison or Milwaukee again. There are lots of attractions in both cities that I have yet to visit, and eirias looks like she'll be in Madison for the long haul, so I'm sure I will return to Wisconsin again. Heck, there may even be other things to do in the state outside those cities. Like House on the Rock, for instance.

And on a slightly random note, my high school's fight song was to the tune of On Wisconsin, with the lyrics modified to our mascot. I get a bonus point for that, right?
