"Hey, what are you doing tomorrow?" DG asked as Cain watched the waitress at the diner walk away from their booth. Cain made a face and glared at DG - she knew exactly what he had to do because it was all he had to do: stay out of trouble while she was at work. DG tried not to smile and turned to look out the window for a second before looking back to Cain with a serious expression.

"I could really use your help," she said simply. Cain nodded, which made DG smile. Leaning forward against the table, she explained: "Monday is Halloween." Cain simply blinked. "But, tomorrow, the Huntington is having a thing for the kids; games and crafts and- Anyway... a couple of our volunteers backed out this afternoon, so..." she trailed, hoping Cain would help her out.

Cain stared at DG for a second with a blank expression. He knew that he wasn't going to like this, but it was better than sitting around DG's apartment or taking up residence in the Lowry's store. Sighing, as if it was a hindrance to his schedule, Cain nodded once and DG breathed a sigh of relief.

"It’s a piece of cake. And, you get fed," she added a second later with a thumbs up and a wink. Cain raised an eyebrow and smiled as his eye caught the holiday-themed menu. Laughing, he reached for the menu to get a closer look; they'd been there enough in the last week he didn't even bother looking at it when they'd arrived. Pushing it toward DG, Cain pointed to an illustration of a witch sitting on a pumpkin.

"Somehow I can't imagine the sorceress getting your sister to sit on a pumpkin." DG snorted and shook her head as the image worked its way into her brain.

The next morning, Cain, once again, found himself back at the Huntington. DG led him over to the children's area and showed him the setup. "So, pretty much just hang out here and observe. Make sure they don't kill each other," DG said with a wave.

"And if they kill each other?" Cain asked with a raised eyebrow. DG smiled and shrugged.

"That's the parents' problem." She reached over and placed a hand on Cain's arm. "You'll be fine. I'll be walking around," she motioned to the area set up for the activities. "If it gets ehhh, just give me a holler." Cain nodded and looked back down to the craft laid out on the table in front of him and his chin dropped to his chest with a huff.

DG scratched her nose to hide the smile on her face. "Look at it this way," she said, putting an arm around Cain and squeezing. "If one of the kids has trouble, you're already a pro." She saw the muscle in Cain’s jaw twitch and she couldn’t force a straight face if her life depended on it.

Knowing Cain was plotting the best way to end her life, DG let go of him and moved off to one of the other tables to check its setup. Cain sighed heavily and looked down to the box of small bags. Three nights before, DG had conned him into helping her create the little bags of beads, foam stickers, cord and a reflector.

They sat on the floor for nearly six hours, late into the night; Cain counting out beads and DG cutting cord into even lengths. At one point, she stopped her task and decided to put one of the necklaces together. While they worked, they told each other about what they'd done over the last few years in the Zone.

DG nodded at the success of her reflector necklace and dropped the thing around Cain's head while he was mid-count of pumpkin-shaped beads. She announced that he would now be safe while trick-or-treating, which launched into an hour of debate as to the lack of safety of letting children take anything from a stranger.

Once they were finally finished, Cain tossed the last bag into the plastic box and let out a sigh. "I'll be happy to never see another bead for the rest of my life." DG laughed and nodded, feeling quite the same way.

Looking back, however, the beads were the least of his problems. Twenty minutes after the activities began, DG came around with facepaint and there was nowhere for Cain to go. Of course, she made it a point to approach him when there was a crowd of kids surrounding the table, all of whom cheered him into letting DG paint his face.

One little girl - who was probably five - frowned and pointed to DG. "You better do what she says." Cain smiled and looked from the girl at the end of the table to DG, who was also smiling.

"Why is that?" Cain asked, kneeling down to the girl's level as she threaded one of the beads onto her length of cord.

She pointed to DG again and, with all the seriousness she could muster, the girl stated: "'cause if you don’t do what she says, she can order the cards to take your head off."

DG laughed silently, knowing Cain didn’t know the reference, and directed her eyes up. Cain followed her gaze and saw the crown and gave her a dirty look. She smiled again and he sighed heavily, rising from the girl's side and moving down the length of the table to DG. Dropping to the ledge surrounding the fountain behind the table, Cain shot a look to the girl, who nodded her approval.

As DG focused on the task at hand, constantly pulling Cain's face back as he looked back to the kids, Cain realized he was actually having fun. But he was set on not letting DG find that out. A minute or two into her artistic creation, Cain's eyes moved to his left as he noticed the little girl peeking around the edge of the table with one of the stickers in her hand.

Cain waved her over and held his hand out for the sticker - all the kids had been having problems getting the paper backing off - peeled off the sticker and stuck the ghost to the girl's nose with a wink. She wrinkled her nose and pulled the sticker off before hurrying around the table and back to her project.

"I think someone's crushin' on you, Tin Man," DG said quietly, leaning close to Cain, pretending to work on the detail of her artwork. Cain’s eyes narrowed and he turned slightly to give DG a look. She pointed to the girl with the tip of her paintbrush and directed her eyes to the reflector hanging around Cain's neck.

Cain glanced over and realized the girl's necklace was a rough copy of the one DG had made for him while they were preparing the kits. DG hadn't said anything when she had come by on her first round and noticed that Cain had the necklace on, but she smiled for a good five minutes. Of course, the only reason Cain had the necklace was because it had been tossed into the plastic bucket and he found it as he was pulling out the bags.

He breathed a laugh and shook his head slightly. "Done," she said a moment later, leaning back and nodding. Cain raised an eyebrow and leaned back, turning to fountain. As he looked at his reflection, Cain forced himself to count to five before turning back to DG. She ignored his murderous glare and turned to the kids.

"What do you think, gang?" she asked, nodding to Cain's new look. The kids all cheered and DG raised an eyebrow at Cain. Taking another deep breath, Cain locked his jaw and shook his head slightly before pushing up from the ledge and moving back to the table. DG smiled again and collected her supplies.

"Can you do a bat?" one boy asked.

"A lion!" another called out. Cain threw a smirk to DG as she was inundated with a crowd of kids who wanted to have their faces painted too. She gave him a dirty look and set her tray of paints down and dropped to her knees as the kids lined up in front of her. Cain laughed and looked back to the kids at the table in front of him. DG traced a rough outline of a bat on the boy’s cheek and turned her head toward Cain, eyes still on the boy.

"Laugh it up, Chuckles..."

_______
These are Pony beads.
Fimo beads were created by the Devil.
After a week of sitting, for eight hours a day, poking the holes with a nail to make sure the hole went all the way through, I can make this statement.
That's just a fun fact, from me to you ;)
