Jeb held the door open and watched in silence as his father stopped and threw a glance over his shoulder. Cain huffed and turned back to Jeb and moved into the room. There was a simple bed against the wall, another desk under the window and a chest of drawers

Jeb motioned to the chair next to the desk and Cain shrugged, moving to look out the window instead. Looking back to Jeb, Cain gave him a genuine smile. "So, Head of the royal family's personal guard..." Jeb leaned against the dresser, crossing his arms and gave his father a victorious smile.

"So... jeans," Jeb stated. Cain literally bit his tongue and tried not to smile.

Ignoring the smirk on his son's face, Cain asked: "How did that come about?" Jeb shook his head and glanced toward the door.

"I have no idea," he said a moment later, blank expression on his face. Chuckling slightly, Jeb moved to the desk and pulled the chair out, waving quickly for Cain to sit. Cain shook his head and moved to the bed, sitting on the end to face his son.

"About a week after you left, two messages arrived; one from you and another from Her Majesty, stating that, if I needed anything..." Cain gave Jeb a tight smile and let his head drop. He'd had the time while Jeb was gone to find Raw to think about the fact that he'd, yet again, abandoned his son.

This time, by choice.

"We heard rumors... nothing substantial, but I wanted to be sure." Jeb reached up to scratch his head. "So we headed this way. Better to deliver the message in person and all," he nodded; Cain nodded as well. "So, got here, asked to speak to Her Highness in regards to her note and told her about our intel."

Jeb stretched his neck from side to side and threw his hands up. "Turned out to be nothing, but better safe than sorry." Cain nodded; he’d have made the same call, he figured. Jeb shrugged and looked around the room. "Her Highness asked if I'd be interested in staying, and... I have to admit that the idea of a real bed and-" Jeb gave Cain a half-smile.

"And you," Jeb said, waving toward Cain. "The Other Side." Cain breathed a laugh and nodded, reaching back to rub his neck.

"Yeah," he said simply. They both glanced toward the door as it pushed open and DG's head appeared.

"You guys can come out now," she stated with a wave. Jeb shot a look to Cain and smiled at DG, pushing himself up from the chair and offering Cain a hand. DG stepped aside as the Cain men moved toward the doorway and Jeb noticed his father stopping at DG's side.

"You okay?" Cain asked her quietly. DG rolled her eyes, more embarrassed with herself and nodded.

"I had a little 'girl-moment'... I'm over it." Cain laughed at her and she slapped his arm as he turned to walk over to Raw. Jeb threw a quick glance to Raw, who didn't look at him, but held out a hand for Cain. Sighing heavily, Jeb shook his head and looked at DG.

"Dinner is at a quarter to seven. The cake is expected at half-past," he offered, assuming they should probably coordinate a surprise that would surely scare half the royal family to the point of screams.

DG moved to Jeb's side and pointed toward the oven. "I made a cake." Cain cleared his throat rather obviously and DG glared at him. "Fine! Missus Ell made the cake, I put it in the oven. Happy?" she demanded, making a face toward Cain. Cain made another face and cleared his throat when he saw the look on Jeb's face.

And that was about the moment Cain realized he'd been spending too much time with Josh. And DG. Raw noticed Cain's expression go blank as the former-Tin Man stared at the floor, contemplating the complete change to his character.

'What the-' Cain wondered. When did he lose all control of his mental faculties? He was supposed to be the big, tough Tin Man. To the job and nothing else. And here he was, sneaking around like a teenager and completely disrespecting the Princess of the Outer Zone.

'You aren't on the Other Side. You can't act like you are.'
'She's not a princess over there.'
'Yes she is. You shouldn't be acting like that at all.'
'When did I start acting like that?’
'The moment you decided to stay.'
'That's not true.'
'You're right. When you arrived.'
'No, it's Josh and the guys. And DG. Influence by surroundings.'
'You took a history class, not psychology.'
'This is bad.'
'Never thought you'd be a teenager again?'
'Really bad.'
'Haven't acted like a fool since-'
'Adora.'
'Deny it all you want, old man. You fell.'
'I didn't.'
'You did.'
'It's the trip. And the class. Stress.'
'Keep telling yourself that.'
'Shut up.'
'She wants you.'
'What?!'
'DG is asking you a question. Good to see where your mind is, though...'
'I will kill you.'

"What?" Cain asked, blinking when he realized everyone was staring at him. DG waved to him and looked back to Jeb.

"Studying kills brain cells," she stated with a shrug. Glancing at her watch, DG leaned back to open the oven door again and check on the cake. Cain took a deep breath and glanced up to Raw, whose eyes were locked on him and his head was tilted ever-so-slightly.

'Damnit.'

_______
I know this looks like filler... Totally not. o.O Okay: it is. *shrug*
I think this one may end soon. No, not like THAT. Cain and DG are moving into a new chapter, so to speak...
Will be dependent on a new title... *pondering*

series: calitin (fyh), fic: tin man, series: follow you home
