Unexpected As the song ended, both of them realized just how close they were to each other. DG turned toward Cain and they stood in silence for another moment - though each would swear it had been minutes - holding their breath.
Part of DG realized the absolute irony of the moment - probably that moment in a movie right before the big kiss, just when the music gets loud and all that crap - as Josh barreled over to Cain and DG.
"Coop's coming!" he whispered loudly. Cain pulled away quickly as DG pushed Cain to one side.
"Scatter," she whispered quickly and looked around as the guys disappeared. Seeing Missus Cooper stop in the middle of the dance floor and frown, DG breathed and moved off to the side of the band's raised stage.
She moved along the hedge bordering the lawn and ducked to the far side at one of the breaks. Moving about half-way down the path, DG stopped and took a deep breath as she slumped onto a bench.
'What the hell was that?!'
She must be losing her mind. 'It was just a weird moment. Close quarters... whatever.' The last thing she needed to start doing was thinking about Wyatt Cain like that. Rolling her eyes, DG planted her elbows on her knees and dropped her head into her hands with a laughed. She prayed that something would go horribly wrong with the party, simply to take her mind off what had just almost happened.
She needed a drink.
"Hey." DG's head shot up at the sound of Cain's voice and she spotted him a few yards away. He threw a glance over his shoulder toward the dance floor and - sure Coop was successfully occupied, stepped away from the break in the hedge.
"How's the great chase?" DG asked with a slight smile.
Cain didn't even try to hide the smile creeping up his face. "I would have thought Josh could move faster than that," he said with a deep breath. His brow furrowed slightly and he took another step toward DG. "You okay?"
DG nodded and turned back to look at her hands. Rubbing at her eyes, she nodded. "Yeah, just finding it very hard to stay awake." Cain stepped over and motioned to the bench. DG gave him a nod and he stepped around her to sit. She turned her head, still resting against her hands and fought a yawn.
"If we were in the Zone," Cain started, looking at the hedge opposite them. "I would suggest you press on. Especially because it would be your party." DG breathed a laugh as Cain turned to give her a smile. "But, this," he said, turned to look at the hedge behind them. "-is not the Zone. And this is not your party. Well, it's your party, but-" DG's hand found his arm and Cain cleared his throat.
"You're right. But this one... I have to take for the team," she said with a smile. "I'll be fine. No ray of sunshine in the morning-" she breathed a laugh and pushed herself up from the bench.
"You are far too dedicated, Princess," Cain stated with a nod. "I blame myself." DG grinned and held out a hand to help him up.
"Come on, Tin Man. We've got a party to close." As she helped Cain heave himself up from the bench, she reached for his tie again and gave it a tug. Cain glanced down and then back up to her over invisible glasses. "Crooked."
Taking a deep breath, DG looked toward the hedge and turned back to face Cain. "We should probably rescue Josh."
"No," Cain said quickly, causing DG to raise an eyebrow. "She'll come after me," he said with a frown. DG started laughing and grabbed Cain's elbow.
"Come on. We'll see if we can find a stick. I'll protect you both." Now, it was Cain's turn to laugh.

Josh had managed to get away from Coop with the ever-popular excuse of nature calling and worked his way around the dance floor, making sure he was hidden from view by a potted plant or tall benefactor. Not surprisingly, he found Cain with DG, who was playing the perfect hostess and chatting up every single guest as if they were the only person at the party.
Even Josh would swear she'd done that sort of thing before. He finally decided he was safest at his mother's side and he’d rather listen to boring discussions about banking or the 'lack of morals of kids today'.
Anything to keep him free of Coop.
Cain and DG moved over to Josh and his mom at one point and the four of them stood at the edge of the party and simply watched. Sasha, Lynn and Michael joined them a while later and, after the fourth comment about how the girls had done a wonderful job, Cain leaned toward DG slightly and nudged her shoulder with his.
"All right everyone," they heard from the stage. Everyone looked up to the singer, who had a glass of champagne in his hand. "I've been asked to give a little speech." The crowd clapped and he made a face. "Thank you all for coming this evening. We've had a great night," he said with a motion to the band behind him. "And we hope you have as well. Our hosts set up one hell of a party," he said with a nod, raising his glass toward DG, Sasha and Michael.
Everyone turned and gave a round of applause in their direction and then turned back as the young man added: "We're gonna close this party out on a high note, so grab somebody and hit the dance floor. Have a wonderful night, drive safe and we'll see you next year!" The crowd clapped again as the band began to prepare for their final number.
Sasha took off immediately to find the 'tall drink of somethin'' she'd been talking to earlier and DG turned to Cain with a smirk. "I don't think so, kiddo," he said as the trumpet section started out loud and clear.
"I'll dance with ya, Dee," Josh said and held out his hand. DG smiled and took his hand and they moved onto the dance floor, falling into step with the tune rather quickly.
"Mister Cain," Lynn said, glaring at her husband, who was shaking his head. "Would you do me the honor of one more dance?" It was much faster than anything he'd ever danced to, and seeing everyone move as they were, he was slightly concerned. However, manners won out and Cain nodded, offering his arm. They stepped onto the floor next to DG and Josh.
"Come on, Barb," Michael said to Josh's mom. "We can't let them show us up." She nodded and they also joined the others on the floor.
