Unexpected WENN last we met: "I will not have you providing for me, Princess." DG leaned back with a smirk and raised eyebrows but held back the laugh. Nodding once, she let go of Cain's arm and leaned toward him again.
"Rest assured, Wyatt Cain: You are not being 'kept'."
DG let a smile creep up her face while waiting for his response - which came as a forced grin - and she put a hand against Cain's cheek. "We're a team, Tin Man. You and me, against all the sides and the Zone," she said with a nod. "But I'm not Raw," she said, pulling her hand back and reaching for the gel again. "I don’t read minds, so if you have a problem, you need to tell me. Anything."
Shrugging, she amended: "Well, not anything... but-" Cain pushed on her leg and nodded once. DG pulled his hand away from her knee and applied a layer of gel over his right arm then moved to the sink to wash her hands again. "Okay, up," she waved to him, offering her hands to help pull Cain from his current seat. Cain winced as he rose and realized that every inch of him felt... well, tight.
And warm.
DG moved behind him and gave him a push into her room and pointed to the bed. "Sit." Cain raised an eyebrow and turned to look at her. "I’ll make it an order," she threatened with a point from him to the bed and she moved out of the room. Heaving himself down, Cain looked up a moment later to see DG returning with a glass and a square of something.
She tossed the pillowcase on the bed and held out the glass of water. "You ever take a pill before?" Cain noticed two white circles in her hand and shook his head. "Just pop it then swallow with the water," she motioned.
The Zone really needed to be introduced to Excedrin.
Cain managed to get the pills down and watched as DG reached for a pillow on the bed, pulled the case off and shook out the new one. "You are in for some discomfort, Tin Man," she said with a nod. "I've been there." She tossed the pillow down and pointed to it.
"I am not-" Cain started, raising a hand in protest.
"Cain, you need to rest right now. And not on a couch. I wouldn’t even do that to Zero." Cain frowned and knew that, again, he might as well concede. Lying back, Cain noticed the pillow was rather cold. DG pulled a blanket from the closet and laid it on the bed before reaching back to pull the curtains shut, giving Cain a dark room.
Reaching back for the blanket, DG draped it across Cain before sitting next to him. "You good?" Cain nodded and pressed his face into the cool pillow.
"Why is this-"
"Pillowcase in the fridge. Mom used to do that for me... Now that I think about it, of course-" DG trailed off at the memory of not being surprised to see a pillowcase in the fridge. "She was probably doing it for her and Popsicle to avoid overheating." DG shook the thought away and glanced down to Cain.
"Try to sleep," she said while running the back of her hand against his cheek. He nodded slightly and closed his eyes. DG gave him a smile and leaned over, pressing the side of her head to his before realizing she'd done it.
Four hours later, Cain woke up in a dark room and had to remember where he was. Pushing the blanket off, Cain forced himself up and moved toward the front room. He spotted DG on the couch, curled up with his pillow. Breathing a small laugh, Cain's brain registered the pain again and he groaned.
He felt bad for waking her up, but she knew what to do in his situation. He leaned over slightly and grabbed DG's ankle, giving it a slight squeeze. "Hey, Kid," he called to her. DG's eyes opened and her head shot up with a deep breath. Blinking, she glanced up to Cain and sat up.
"You okay?"
Cain nodded slowly. "You have any more of those white things?" DG smiled and nodded, pushing herself off the couch. She would have to teach Cain the finer points of self-medicating at some point, but not today. Moving around to the cupboard, DG reached for the bottle and one of the glasses next to it.
She filled the glass with water and passed it to Cain before opening the bottle and shaking out two pills. "Simon went on a rampage," DG said with a nod to the fridge as she passed the pills to Cain. "We've got food for a month." Cain swallowed the pills with the contents of the glass and sighed. The last thing he cared about at the moment was eating.
Ever.
"I fear the menu on Thursday," DG said with a shrug.
"What’s on Thursday?" Cain asked with a frown.
"Thanksgiving," DG responded. "Come on. Back to bed with you, lobster boy." Cain frowned as DG pushed him out of the kitchen area. "From now on, you wear a hat. You hear me, Wyatt Cain?" she asked forcefully.
"My hat is in the Zone because your mother said-" DG huffed a laugh.
"I'll take you to Disneyland. We'll go on Indiana Jones and I will buy you a new damn hat," she said as Cain sat back down on the bed. "And we're totally gettin' you a bed. You can't keep sleeping on the couch if you're working," she said with a nod. Cain made a face and flipped the pillow over, hoping the other side was cooler.
"Are you hiding another room somewhere?" Cain asked as he rested his head on the cooler pillow.
"No," DG replied, giving him a thump on the chest. "We'll put it out there," she said, pointing to the living room.
"And when you're entertaining guests? Where will they sit?" DG looked back to Cain with a glare. Was he messing with her?
"They can stand," she said with a snap. "Or sit on your lap," she added quietly, tapping him on the nose. He caught her hand and pushed it away, wincing as he moved.
"Ow..." he laughed. It would figure that, after everything he'd been through, he'd be brought down by a single sun. In a way, it was kind of ironic, he thought. 'That makes no sense,' he thought next. Realizing that arguing the validity of his thoughts made his head hurt more, Cain decided to stop thinking.
Unfortunately, his mouth didn't get that notice.
"This one is just fine," he stated, half-asleep. DG smiled at a sunburned-Cain and squeezed his hand.
"First time you kick me, it's back to the Zone with ya," she said quietly before letting go of him and standing. DG readjusted the blanket and pulled the door shut behind her, leaving Cain in the dark once again.
