Unexpected At some point - way past two minutes later - DG woke up and yawned. Opening her eyes, she lifted her head with a still-asleep frown and looked at her current pillow, which normally went by the name of Wyatt Cain. She pulled back from him and reached for the blanket at the end of the bed, spreading it out over both of them, and rolled to her other side, returning to her real pillow.
She was too tired to even care that the lights were still on in her room and the bathroom. Or that she was still in her dress. Or that Cain was in bed with her.
That is, until about a minute later, when Cain rolled over and pulled her into a bear hug.
It wasn't that she wondered about Cain's personal life, but she figured it'd probably been a very long time since he'd shared a bed with anyone. And that part of her that didn't want to think about Cain that way was telling her that he simply thought she was Adora.
And she knew he missed her so very much. So, if it would help him get through one night...
But the part of her that did want to think about Cain that way was on overdrive. She'd never had anyone hold her like this. She'd imagined it a hundred times - Cain being the one doing it more often than not in the last few years - and it was quite a feeling.
For one night, she could let Cain believe she was Adora. And she would believe he knew it was her.
-*-
As the sun came up, the sunlight poured in through the window and DG grumbled. She usually remembered to pull the curtains shut the first night of her weekend so that she could sleep in. Why didn't she last night? Opening one eye, she winced at the light and turned to give the window a dirty look.
Maybe the curtains would close themselves.
It took her a second to process the sight of Wyatt Cain next to her on the bed. He looked rather peaceful, she noted, which was a weird look for Cain. Shaking the thought away, DG's eyes went from his rolled-sleeves down to his dress shoes. Looking down to her own attire, she cursed silently and dropped her head back to the pillow in defeat.
'Great,' she thought. She didn't even remember leaving the party. She stared at the ceiling and had a flash of getting out of Josh's Jeep, and something about two minutes. Or was it seven minutes? Glancing back to Cain, her eyes fell to the middle of the bed. She was holding his hand. Or he was holding her hand.
Either way: there was hand-holding.
DG bit her lip and slowly pulled her hand from Cain's, never taking her eyes off him. Once her hand was back in her possession, DG blinked and shifted enough so that she was now resting on her left shoulder, mirroring Cain.
'You are walking a fine line, Princess,' DG told herself with a huff. 'Especially with what you're about to ask of him...' She figured she'd hold off until after the gala. Of course, knowing what he'd put up with the night before - specifically Coop - she might have played the Cain card one time too many.
'Forget what he'll say. What's he gonna do when he wakes up? Here?' her brain supplied.
Well, they were both fully-dressed and adults... and there was no law DG was aware of regarding sleeping in the same bed. It was probably a better night’s sleep than he’d had after five months on the couch.
Maybe she should try the second bed-speech again.
She refused to let herself consider the possibility of having him stay right there for... well... ever. Of course, it wasn't like she was using that half of the bed anyway and- 'Crap,' she thought, realizing that she was now thinking about it.
Closing her eyes, DG turned to look away. The sound of Cain jerking awake a second later caused her to turn back. Cain squinted and looked around the room quickly, trying to fight a yawn. It was hard for DG not to laugh because he looked rather funny doing it.
"Well, I think it's definitely been two minutes," he said after sitting up. They both laughed and DG pulled herself up to a sitting position as Cain rolled off the bed. As he moved around the end of the bed, DG heaved herself off the bed - not realizing she was caught on the blanket - and tumbled forward.
Cain, of course, caught her effortlessly. "Thanks," she said with a nervous laugh. Whether from embarrassment or the fact Cain's arms were wrapped around her, she didn't know.
"You good?" he asked before letting go of her. She nodded and leaned down to untwist the blanket from around her legs as Cain moved to the door. Pointing to the bathroom, he held up two fingers. "Give me two minutes, and it's all yours." DG smiled and nodded as he dodged into the bathroom and she turned to look at the curtains.
'So much for that being a dream,' she thought, realizing the moment Cain's arms wrapped around her that he had hugged her last night. This morning. Whenever. Shaking her head, DG moved over to the dresser and pulled out a clean t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
Two minutes later, Cain nodded to the bathroom and headed into the living room. DG flipped the light off as she passed between the rooms and pushed the bathroom door shut.
-*-
Cain stepped out onto the street and glanced both ways before crossing over to the bakery. He had Simon's jacket and tie and wanted to make sure they were returned in a timely manner. Really, he needed to get out of the apartment for a few minutes.
He hadn't intended to fall asleep. Let alone in DG's bed. With DG. Of course, he wasn't in the Zone, but she was still the princess and he was still just a subject. And he was still married. Even if she was...
He was walking a very fine line and needed to stop before anything happened. At all.
Cain entered the bakery and nodded to Simon as Jeanie came in from the back. "Good morning," she said with a bright smile. Cain nodded and held up the jacket and tie. Jeanie waved to him and pulled Cain over to the far counter. "Oh, honey. He'll never wear it again. You keep it."
"How was the party?" Simon asked from the register.
"It was... different," Cain said honestly.
"You took pictures?" Jeanie asked, holding back a cup of coffee, waiting for his answer. Cain nodded and she offered him the cup.
"Josh has pictures, but there was also a man running around flashing in everyone's face," Cain said, motioning toward his eyes.
"Any plans today?" Jeanie asked, pointing to the tray of pecan rolls in the case.
Cain nodded as another yawn slipped out. "Studying."
Jeanie smiled and slid the door of the case open. "And DG?"
Cain sighed and shook his head. "I was hoping she would sleep. Because she hasn't been, but-" he shrugged and took another sip of coffee. Jeanie stepped back around the case and handed Cain a small paper bag.
"Well, you'll just have to make her sleep," she said with a nod.
Cain raised an eyebrow. "Just like that?"
"Well," Jeanie said with a slight nod. "I'm not suggesting you beat her over the head with a shovel," she snapped. Cain snorted lightly at the mental image, because he would find DG a stick. It would have to be a fair fight, after all. "Tell her you're worried about her," Jeanie continued. "She'll appreciate that you care," she added, seeing the look of disbelief on Cain's face.
Cain sighed, gave her a single nod and turned to Simon, who simply waved a hand, not looking up from his paper. "It's on your tab."
Cain smiled and turned back to Jeanie, who gave him a pat on the arm and pushed him back toward the door. "You're sure about the jacket?" he asked her with a furrowed brow.
"Absolutely," she said with a nod.
Cain stopped and leaned over to kiss her on the cheek. "Thank you." She smiled again and held open the door as he passed. She moved over to the other side of the counter from Simon and leaned against the counter, crossing her arms.
"What are you doin', woman?" he asked without looking up from the paper. Jeanie raised an eyebrow and looked at him over her shoulder.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she said, shaking her head. Simon closed the paper and pushed off the counter. Moving around to her side, he placed a hand on her neck and squeezed slightly.
Pulling her close, Simon pressed a kiss to his wife's head. "I'm talking about the way you treat them."
Jeanie turned her face away and moved the pens around in the pen cup next to the register. "I'm not treating them in any way," she said with a pout.
Simon pressed another kiss to the side of her head and whispered: "You treat them like an old married couple."
"Only because they act like an old married couple!" Jeanie snapped back, turning to face Simon. "They just don't realize they're doing it," she added a moment later in a quieter tone.
"Hmm," Simon grumbled, stepping away from her a moment later and reaching for his coffee mug. Jeanie looked back to the door and shook her head. She saw it. It was only a matter of time before they did, too.
She laughed as the words from White Christmas echoed in her head, making her realize that she was a step away from being Vera-Ellen: "Just like honesty needs a little plus, fate needs a little push."
If only she could dance like that...

Okay.. this time, I really DID catch up to myself. It wouldn't be so bad... but I don't like what's next... so it needs some tweaking.
Which is why you got more this round.
