There was a three-hour gap between the closing of the museum on Saturday evening and the beginning of the gala. After three-and-a-half weeks of running around, organizing the event down to every last detail, DG and Sasha finally were ready. DG had spent the entire day organizing all the last-minute details that could be set up without affecting the daily traffic, as well as planning what would need to be done once the patrons were gone.

Sasha was coming up with lists of all the things that could possibly go wrong.

DG's superiors were rather glad that she'd offered to take on many of the duties - most without asking - as it freed them up to make sure all the catering staff knew where they needed to be; the band and tech crew were set up in the right location; and the security staff was on point.

Josh picked Cain up around eight, simply because he wanted to make sure they were there for the shortest amount of time possible. Jeanie demanded they stop over before leaving because she wanted a picture of the two of them all dressed up. Josh thought it was a rotten way to relive the torture of prom photos, but he wasn’t about to say anything to Jeanie.

He knew she could take him.

After promising to get at least one picture with DG before the end of the night - Josh showed Jeanie what the images on his phone looked like - Cain and Josh were allowed to leave for the Huntington. The party had been going for nearly an hour when Josh and Cain finally arrived; the band was playing an upbeat tune, ladies in glittery dresses were laughing while holding glasses of champagne and men in fancy bowties were telling each other stories of their glory days.

Josh was giving Cain directions in football terms and warning him of the different signs to look out for when it came to the 'grabby-handed old ladies.' Specifically: Coop. Cain laughed and figured it couldn't be as bad as Josh was saying as he glanced around the crowd for DG.

DG was talking to Mister Carpenter, who she'd spoken with a few times before when he and his wife would come to the museum for lunch. He was telling her about their last trip - a cruise around the Mediterranean - when she spotted Cain and Josh on the patio.

She almost laughed at the realization that Cain was standing in roughly the same place she was the day he arrived. She excused herself from Mister Carpenter, promising to come right back to hear the rest of the story about the donkey ride up the mountain and moved across the lawn to Cain and Josh.

She had to remind herself for a moment that it was Cain, because... well...

Josh gave her a hug and took a deep breath as he spotted at least three potential dangers within a hundred feet. Giving Cain a nod, Josh glanced at DG again and stated: "I'm gonna go find Mom before I die in the name of art." Cain shook his head and took another glance around before looking at DG.

"Come on," she said, taking his arm. "We're gonna turn you into a schmoozer." Cain let a smile slip as DG dragged him into the fray.

-*-

Cain slipped into a protection detail-role and found himself watching everyone, giving the occasional smile and nod, and generally on the defensive. Taking in every detail, noticing every person's movements and how their actions didn't always match their words. This part, he realized, was just like the Zone: those with money acted differently than those without. Especially when they were all in the same room.

And, on top of that, he had to remember not to laugh at the murderous looks Josh was shooting him from the makeshift dance floor.

Josh had found himself cornered by Missus Jefferson, and thanks to some prompting by Mom, he'd not been able to wrangle from her side for nearly half an hour. DG popped over to Cain's side at one point and nudged him with her elbow.

"Having fun, Tin Man?" Cain continued to watch the milling crowd and smiled.

"You were right, Princess. This is not like a Zone party." DG grinned and gave a nod to a passing guest.

"We like to keep things a little more low-key over here." Cain turned to look at DG and she gave him a nod. "Lookin' good, Tin Man." Cain glanced down as DG reached for his tie and gave it the slightest tug. He nodded and looked back up to the crowd.

"Uh oh," DG breathed behind a wide smile as a woman approached them. Cain raised an eyebrow and turned to see who DG was looking at. "Missus Cooper, you are looking absolutely wonderful tonight," DG said as she leaned forward to kiss the woman's cheek.

"As are you, dear. The place looks lovely," she stated, turning to give the assembled group a look. Leaning close to DG, she lowered her voice and whispered: "Did you see George Finley and that hot pepper on his arm? And in front of Phyllis..." DG's eyes shot to Cain for a second and she nodded to Missus Cooper.

"And who is this?" Missus Cooper asked, eying Cain suspiciously.

"This is Wyatt Cain. Mister Cain, this is Missus Ellen Cooper." Cain gave the woman a polite nod.

"Tell me, Mister Cain... do you dance?" Cain gave the woman a slight smile and looked at DG, who was biting her lip to hide the smile. He knew he didn't want to dance; he also knew that his dear old grandmother would return to the living long enough to slap him silly if he didn't remember his manners.

"Not well... but it would be my pleasure, ma'am." Holding out a hand for Missus Cooper, Cain shot a look to DG and she forced a neutral grin. As they passed, DG lost control of the smile and turned away, hoping she wasn't blushing. Glancing back his way, DG laughed again at the look on his face, knowing exactly what he must be thinking.

Where was a pack of Papay runners when you needed them?
