Unexpected DG padded down the hallway of the palace, cursing her conscience six ways from Sunday. The stress management class everyone at the Huntington was required to take told her not to go to bed angry, regardless of who she was angry with. She'd been ignoring that little niggling for a day and a half and, while it wasn't entirely the reason she couldn’t sleep, she knew that it was responsible for a good chunk of her discomfort.
As she passed one of the tall clocks in the hallway, DG rolled her eyes at the hour. At the end of the hallway, she spotted light coming from one of the doorways and slowed her step. As she neared the opening, she could see Cain sitting on the large, red couch, engrossed in his notebook. She watched him for a second before leaning against the doorframe and giving the wall a few raps.
Cain glanced up and gave her a smile. "Is it safe?" she asked, nodding toward him.
"Yeah," he said quietly, setting his notebook down on his knee.
DG moved into the room and sat down on the couch. She stared at the wall across from them and Cain glanced down to his notes for a moment before they both turned to each other and said: "I'm sorry."
They both laughed for a second and Cain nodded to her. "I'm sorry for yelling at you about my pants." He'd gone a full day without talking to DG before, but the last two days had just been weird.
DG looked back to the wall and nodded. "And I'm sorry for looking at your butt three years ago." She couldn't even say it with a straight face, but she was determined not to look at Cain.
"Yeah, you shouldn't be looking at my butt ever," Cain said, looking back to his notebook.
DG scrunched her face and sighed. "Do you remember that conversation we had a few months ago? About when you walk down the street?" Cain turned to DG and raised an eyebrow.
"You mean the one where everyone's picturing me naked?" he asked with a smirk. DG rolled her eyes.
"Not the part of the conversation I was going for, but: Yeah, that one," she said, turning to glare at him. Cain simply continued giving her the smirk. "I'm a girl, Cain." He raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. "It stands to reason that, at some point, I'm gonna look at your butt." She nodded and pointed to the door.
"I've looked at your butt. I've looked at Glitch’s butt. I've looked at Josh’s butt. Hell, I've looked at Jeb's butt. I've even looked at my dad's butt; granted, I didn't know he was my dad and he was kinda kidnapping me and he threw me over his shoulder and all I could really see was his butt-"
"I got it," Cain said, grabbing DG's shoulder and nodding.
"Oh, thank God," DG breathed out, dropping her head to her lap. She realized somewhere around "girl" that she wasn't going to be able to shut up. She knocked her forehead against her knee twice and then sat up, turning to Cain. "Just once, can we please fight about something normal?"
"Like what?" Cain asked with a smile.
"My football team is better than your football team?" she suggested with a shrug.
"You don't have a football team," Cain said with a raised eyebrow, grinning as DG pressed her lips into a tight line and gave him a dirty look.
"What are you reading?" DG asked leaning toward Cain slightly to see his notes.
"The same thing I read every night-" he started then tried to look at his eyebrows.
DG bit her lip and gave him a few seconds before whispering: "Pinky."
"Gah!" he said with a huff. DG breathed a laugh and rested her head against the back of the couch. "You'd think I've heard it enough, I would get it right."
DG reached over and put a hand on Cain's shoulder. "You know, no one's expecting you to go full-Other Side, Cain."
"It's the things they say every day. They start arguing about which team of horses is better at football and when they ask me which team I'm for, I say the Chargers because that's the team Josh says is the best. And Josh should know these things, right?" Cain asked DG with a nod. She breathed a laugh and nodded.
"And I know that I like the music that Josh gave me to listen to. And the music they played at the party, I liked that. But do I like it because it's all I've heard or do I like it because I like it?"
"Well... if you didn't like it, would you still listen to it?" DG asked, reaching for Cain’s textbook, which was sitting on the table in front of them.
"No," Cain said after a moment's contemplation.
"Then you must like it," DG shrugged. "You liked the music from the party?" Cain nodded. "Well then," she said with a grin. "We're just gonna have to introduce you to the Rat Pack." Leaning forward to put Cain's textbook back, DG sighed. "Better that you're picking stuff up from the guys, Cain. I worry about what you might be picking up from me," she added with a shudder.
"An obsession with work and an addiction to turkey sandwiches?" Cain responded automatically, complete with a cheeky grin. DG backhanded him across the chest and he recoiled. "Ow." Both of them sighed heavily and silence took over again. DG leaned back against the couch and stared up at the ceiling.
Cain glanced back to his notes and stated: "Why don't you get some sleep, Kid?" He figured that once the stress leading up to their trip was past, she’d finally get some rest.
"I would love to," she said with a sigh. A moment later, she turned her head toward Cain. "It's too quiet."
Cain dropped his notebook to his lap and looked up to the ceiling, as well. "Thank you," he breathed, grateful to know it wasn't just him. Letting his chin drop to his chest, Cain laughed and turned his head to look at DG.
"To have just one guy drive by with thumpers..." she said quietly, pointing to the window behind them.
"The guy in the black truck," Cain replied, pointing to her.
"Yes!" she cheered, holding up a hand, which Cain mimicked and they performed a sideways-high five. She glanced at the notebook again and nodded. "You need any help?"
Cain glanced at the notebook and shook his head before rubbing at his eyes. "No... I'm just trying to bore myself into unconsciousness." DG laughed and closed her eyes for a moment, then turned away as she was hit with a powerful yawn.
Twenty minutes later, DG was asleep against Cain's arm and he'd read the same page five times. He shifted, pulling his arm free and moving the notebook into his right hand while he rubbed at his eyes again with his left. Blinking a few times, Cain tried to give the page another read.
He never even noticed that DG was now curled into his side.
