#401 - zestyzorra - Polar Bear

It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly when I came to love polar bears, but for the past few years, they are all I can think about. I believe that one reason for this is the connection we have, based on similar traits. For one, the polar bear is a solitary animal, with a body designed to handle the extremely cold weather. Ever since I moved from Las Vegas to Seattle, it's become more clear to me that I, too, prefer solitude. In Las Vegas, I have a HUGE family and I'm constantly around them, when at home. But here, I know no one other than my boyfriend. After 2 years, I've made very little effort to get to know other people, not because I'm scared but because this is how I prefer to be. Like polar bear mothers who tend to their cubs, I enjoy being around family or friends in small amounts. I don't need to be the center of the universe.

Also, I particularly relate to the polar bear's ability to withstand extreme cold. Having been born & grown up in such a warm climate, I've always desired to relocate somewhere cooler. But unlike most people, I think Seattle is simply NOT cool enough. I've been to the Yukon and Alaska and I felt more at home there. (In fact, just being so close to the Northern Territories, as well as watching Ice Truckers one random night, has made me want to continue farther north, at the very least for vacation.) I'd always rather be cold and rolling around in the snow, and I think that's one reason polar bears are so attractive to me.

Finally, I absolutely admire the strength, agility and hunting prowess that polar bears have at their disposal. They are one of the most powerful and dangerous animals alive, and yet they have such an adorable exterior. I love the contrast between soft & cuddly and gigantic claws and teeth that could tear someone's head off. I've always wanted to protect myself more than I actually can, and I think being underestimated can come in handy. Last, I just want to say that polar bears are so adorable to me, so fun and intelligent. I love that they can swim amazingly, roll around on icebergs, and then forage in the meadow during the summer. I adore them and I couldn't be happier to have one as my animagus form.

#402 - muhnemma - Chartreux

As soon as I saw my list of options, I knew I would have a difficult time selecting one. All of them were wonderful choices and there were valid reasons for selecting any of them as my animagus. As I read more about the animals, however, it became clear that I felt the greatest connection to the Chartreux.

“Towards those they love, Chartreux display a passionate devotion that strangers would never guess at.”

If I had to choose one sentence to explain my connection to the Chartreux, that would be it. The gentle demeanour of the Chartreux belies its depth of feeling. Similarly, I am quiet and reserved around strangers, but to my friends I’m fiercely loyal and affectionate. The criticism and praise of those I love affects me deeply, like the sensitive Chartreux whose feelings are “easily hurt”. The approval of people I respect motivates me to strive towards improving myself, while the Chartreux avoids repeating acts that have previously led to criticism.

The Chartreux does not mind spending long periods of time alone. This suggests that, like me, they retain independence despite their attachment to loved ones.

Curiosity and inquisitiveness are further traits I share with the Chartreux, who seem to be endlessly interested in the world around them. Although very quiet cats, they vocalize when they come across things that interest them. Discovering this particular piece of information made me smile as I have often been scolded for being too quiet, but it’s difficult to stop me talking about something I’m very interested in. Like me, they expend their energy in a flurry of activity and then spend the rest of the day dozing.

The Chartreux has exactly what I want in an animagus. In my application I wrote that I wanted a form that could project confidence but was not necessarily outgoing, and I feel the Chartreux fulfils this. With its friendly and gentle nature, it could be at ease in a crowd. While not aggressive or confrontational they are “fast and accurate” hunters, which means they are able to defend themselves if necessary . Although I was not specific about what I wanted in terms of appearance, I find the Chartreux’s coat and eyes to be beautiful and unique.

I think the Chartreux would be an excellent fit for me. We share enough similarities for me to feel a strong connection with it, but it’s more gregarious and open nature would allow me to experience the world in a different light.

#404 - rvillarrubia - Black Mamba

It has been difficult for me to choose my Animagus form. I have been torn between the Black Mamba and the Water Moccasin during the last few days but I finally decided to pick the Black Mamba as my Animagus.

The Black Mamba, the world's deadliest snake.

It is true that I share with the Moccasin the nocturnal habits and the preference for chillier weather but I think the Black Mamba and I are a lot more similar.

The normal coloration of the Mamba is light olive, brownish, gray, or sometimes khaki. All of them are light colours and I have very pale skin so I can relate to that. The name "black mamba" is given to the snake not because of its body colour but because of its ink-black mouth. It displays this physical attribute when threatened. They are also very big snakes (2.5 - 3 meters long) but that doesn’t mean they are clumsy or slow, they are the fastest snakes in the world and I have to say that me, being a girl, I’m quite big too, but that never was a problem relating to my sports skills. I was a ballet dancer when I was younger!

One thing I really like about the Black Mamba is the habitat. Well, they have adapted to a variety of climates ranging from the savannah, woodlands and rocky slopes to dense forests and even the humid swamps of Africa but they are commonly found in the sugarcane fields. They climb to the top of the sugarcanes to bask in the sun and to wait for their prey. I am adaptable too and although I prefer chilly weather, I am used to living in a very hot place like Spain, especially in the summer.

The Black Mambas are found in pairs or small groups even with their eggs. They lay their eggs in a damp, warm burrow and leave. I am not the kind of person that would leave you alone, but I need my space and I prefer being alone than surrounded by lots of people. I like having certain people around me for some time but these are always the people I choose and only my closest friends, but I soon come to the point where I want to be left alone.

What I also like about them is their patience. They will strike a large animal and then release it. They then stalk their victim until it becomes paralyzed. With smaller animals, they will strike and hold on until the animal is paralyzed. Something like that requires a lot of time. I am the same. I like to do things in the best way I can although it takes me a lot of time.

They are shy and secretive, but when a black mamba is cornered it mimics a cobra by spreading a neck-flap, exposing its black mouth and hissing. If this attempt to scare away the attacker fails, the black mamba will strike repeatedly, injecting large amounts of venom into its victim. I am the same way. I don’t like to open myself if I don’t feel comfortable enough with the people around me; I prefer to be the one on the side, listening to what it is said but I have strong principles and will defend them if I am challenged.

I have always felt a strong connection with snakes and as a Slytherin, having one as my Animagus form makes me feel proud and special.

#405 - klef - Mountain Goat

MOUNTAIN GOAT
or goats have horny parts
So I knew almost right away that after my choices were posted, that I was going to be a mountain goat. This combines my intense dislike of the heat with the fact that I enjoy the wind. I could be out in my own bubble climbing some rocks having a grand old time. Besides, those coats are good to -50F (-46C) how cool is that?

The mountain goat also is a more solitary animal for a herd type, which is fits me perfectly. I do so much better in smaller groups. They do get together during certain times of year which is great because there are times I totally want to be surrounded by people, while other times I'd rather be much more alone. They also are the largest mammal in high-altitude habitats, so being unique like that is very important to me.

I'm super excited that the females of this species also have horns. I'm someone who is apt to stand up for myself and get into fights and the nannies do this just as much as the billies. In fact, nannies can fight to protect their space and food. As a fat kid, I totally hear that. You leave my end seat and snacks alone. I'm going to sit there and eat, the hell with you. Sure most of the fights between goats are harmless (well, at least with the nannies) but they have lead to injury and death. Yeah, pretty hardcore for a mountain goat maybe they just butt them off the cliff... who knows. Nannies have to protect their babies from many different predators, showing they are tough and badass. Sometimes they even try to dominate bighorn sheep... I try to be number one A LOT, so this totally speaks to me. My favorite though? Mountain goats can occasionally be aggressive towards humans, with at least one reported fatality resulting from an attack by a mountain goat. Oh yes, it's true.

So all in all, a big, fuzzy, angry mountain goat and I would be perfect.

#406 - classical_wolf - Australian Shepherd

I have decided to go with the Australian Shepherd because it captures both the best and worst aspects to my personality as well as my personality overall. I have a connection to canines, so that is another reason why this form is perfect for me. In going from a member's vote, "the Shepherd is very trusting, but is also fixated on the herd". I am very trusting, more often than not, but I am also very focused, almost to the point of pure fixation or OCD. The shepherd is also very attentive and is hard working, which I feel also fits my personality. One thing that stood out to me was the energy and drive that the Shepherd has. I can have a very high amount of energy with something that I'm passionate about, and I'm very driven to accomplish, succeed, and even alpha, depending on the situation. I'd say that by being a herding dog, the Shepherd has it's moments of being an alpha. I also found out that the Shepherd is a good therapy and search and rescue dog. This relates to my Masters program studies of (various) counseling (forms). I would consider myself to be service-oriented, and I like that the Shepherd is service-oriented. Finally, the markings and coat-colors also stood out to me. All of these reasons have contributed to my choosing the Australian Shepherd.

#407 - strawberry_star - Green Sea Turtle

I had gotten 4 wonderful choices of Atlantic Flying Fish, Green Sea Turtle, Keel-Billed Toucan, and False Water Cobra. After contemplating each one, complete with a pros and cons list, I've decided that I feel closest to the Green Sea Turtle so that is my choice.

When I was around 13, I had a friend who had her hair colored similar to a squirrel and she even ate like a squirrel with her hands barely leaving her mouth and looking around with big eyes. So I nicknamed her 'squirrel'. She figured that she owed me a nickname as well and one day she noticed that I always walked slower than everyone else and had a little green backpack, thus she named me 'turtle'. Other friends were then named by us with animal names, but the name 'turtle' stuck with me throughout middle school and high school.

At 15, my then boyfriend and first love gave me his beloved book on Kurt Cobain from Nirvana. In the book, Kurt describes his fascination with turtles: "Turtles basically have this 'f*ck you' attitude- 'I'm stuck in the tank, I'm miserable, I hate you, and I'm not going to perform for you.'" Which was basically my whole attitude during my teen years and sometimes even now.

The Green Sea Turtle is a complex creature and that's what I put as my main characteristic is complex. Although they are semi-social with other Green Turtles, especially during mating season, they are also solitary and they have the defense mechanism that if threatened they can hide inside their shell.

I said that I wanted to be able to swim and these Sea Turtles live in the ocean, but can also go up onto the beaches especially to nest. This makes them adaptable. What also makes them adaptable is that they are found in all sorts of places around the world. So, me, being picky about climate could choose anywhere basically that I want to live or travel to.

The person that picked Green Sea Turtle for me also mentioned, "...they are also an endangered species, which I always like when I vote on a Slytherin, because it gives them the air of exclusivity and rarity." That is very true! Slytherins don't like to be some common animal, so the Green Sea Turtle would help make me more special.

#408 - stellar_kar - Siberian Husky

I had a really tough time choosing my Animagus because I could relate to all four choices, so I knew I would have to do a lot more research. My first instinct was to choose the Husky, because it is a dog and I have 3 and have always had dogs my whole life. But I decided to see which animal really suited my personality. The more I looked into that breed the more I found similarities that outnumbered any of my other choices. The husky is a pack animal because it is closely related to wolves and that is something I wanted. Being around my family is very very important to me and I would like to have that exemplified in my chosen form. Huskies are suited for the cold, and I love colder weather. They also were bred as sled dogs so they have a lot of stamina. I am a pretty athletic person I swim, played sports and dance. The only draw back was they don't seem to swim much and that was one of my key traits, but none of my other choices were strong swimmers either. Luckily I found a video of them swimming( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCPRBtg6TtQ&feature=related) and doing it really well. Also this caught my eye on wikipedia "Huskies tend to be very observant on the actions of people around them and have been known to mimic common household activities such as turning on lights with their paws and opening doors with their canines." I am a huge people watcher and I do like to mimic things people do (i.e. in dance or something I'm new at). Also huskies are known to be playful, intelligent and also easy to train but they can get bored easily. I notice that I am the same exact way. I will really enjoy something for awhile but if I do it for too long I quickly lose interest and it's tough getting me motivated to do it again. I'm glad I did research on my other choices but my first instinct was correct. The Siberian Husky is very much everything I wanted and I can't see myself as anything else.

#409 - sweetthumbelina - Monarch Butterfly

I can imagine my animagus being something that is symbolic of freedom, change, and optimism. I have always felt drawn to butterflies, and I feel like the Monarch Butterfly is the perfect form for me. Hans Christian Anderson once wrote, '"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."' I thrive in sunshine and have the biggest love for flowers and plants.

I am very sensitive to cold temperatures, despite my fascination with and goal to eventually do research in Antarctica. The Monarch Butterfly's insides can tear them apart due to the water in their body tissues freezing. How overwintering insects can overcome this and essentially survive is to alter their body chemistry. Even if I live in California, there are some very cold winter days that freeze me to the bone. Monarchs tend to migrate to the coast, specifically southern California and the transvolcanic mountains in Mexico. I have always been drawn to the coast, especially on warm sunny days that California is known for. I also love volcanoes; it is my favorite geological landform to study. Monarchs also live all over the U.S.A, Canada, Central America, South America, Canary Islands, Hawaii, some Mediterranean countries, Australia, and Indonesia, among other places. I can imagine my animagus not being limited to one particular place, like the Sierra Nevada mountains or one particular landscape like the desert or ocean.

I would want my animagus to be everything a Monarch Butterfly is: elegant, graceful, seeking of warm climates (I love California immensely), and don't seek to harm humans or anyone else; they simply want to live. While Monarchs are poisonous, their bright colors are an indication to predators that they are toxic, not edible. I love bright, happy colors immensely. The Monarchs diet consists of nectar from flowers, and energizes them for a long migration to warm climates. Flowers have the uncanny ability to energize me and make me feel happy and alive. I love having flowers around because they are like caffeine to me.

Finally, the Monarchs have four life cycles: egg, larvae (caterpillar), pupa, and butterfly. I want my animagus to be an example of change and growth.

#411 - _chngingx3lanes - Akita Inu

I was really surprised how much I liked all my choices. I really felt a connection to all of the animals and was excited to have a good variety to choose from.

After some thought and research, I decided the Akita Inu would be the best fit for me. One thing that was most important to me about being an animagus, was to fit in and not look at of place. While Akita’s aren’t the most common dogs, they would also not raise anyone’s suspicions to see them out and about. It would really allow me to see the world from a different point of view. As a dog I would be able to let my curiosity wonder and get into things I wouldn’t be able to as a human. I might need to use my animagus form to be sneaky from time to time.

Also, the Akita can be aggressive at times they need to be. This is important to me because I feel my animagus form needs to be courageous and be able to fight when needed. The intelligence of an Akita is strong enough that it allows them to have a mind of their own. This really fits me because once I set my mind to something, it’s hard for anyone to change it. While Akita’s are social, they are not necessarily loud, they don’t tend to bark a lot. This is similar to me because while I enjoy socializing, I’m never the loudest in the bunch and is considered quiet from time to time.

Overall, I feel the Akita Inu is the best choice. I would be able to fun and jump on land, swim when I want to cool off, and see the world from a different point of view while not experiencing anything completely unexpected.
